SUMMARY
After a windy night last night, we can expect a cool day today, with northerly breezes that could get a bit gusty. It shouldn’t be as windy as it was last night. There could still be a stray flurry, especially across Fentress County, but there will be no impacts from that. The rest of the week looks partly to mostly sunny, with pleasant afternoons and cool nights. Rain chances return on Saturday, with continued mild temperatures.
DISCUSSION
The weather will be rather quiet this week. We will have to wait on our next storm system before we can get any more rain. That system arrives on Saturday. Right now, it looks like that will be a pretty good rain maker for us, with rainfall amounts possibly flirting with the one-inch mark. I’ll keep you updated on that.
Yesterday, I told you about Spearfish, SD and how they had that wild temperature roller coaster ride because of the Chinook winds. On this day in 1963 we went on a pretty wild temperature roller coaster ride ourselves! What is possibly the strongest cold front in Middle TN history blew threw here and dropped temperatures as much as 60 degrees! Nashville dropped from 48 degrees in the afternoon to -13 by midnight! That is the greatest one-day drop in temperature in Nashville’s history. In addition, snow moved in behind the front and coated all of Middle TN with half a foot of snow. Here on the plateau we had closer to 10 inches of snow. That would have been a wild day to be in my shoes! I can’t imagine trying to forecast all of that in one day.
Thankfully, our weather is much, much calmer than that today! We really are having some pleasant weather for this time of year. For those of you who like warmer weather, every extended outlook indicates normal to above normal temperatures for us for the next three months. Extended forecast are very iffy, I always say, but there are no indications (at this point) that February will be plagued by arctic air like January has been. Precipitation looks above normal, so hopefully it won’t get too dry around here.
The consequence of a warmer end of winter/beginning of spring will be the trade-off we’ll have to make with our weather worries. Warmer weather means less snow but it also means an increased risk of severe weather. I’ll be here watching it all, though, and I’ll let you know as soon as I see anything that might be coming our way. I still have faith in those persimmon seeds. I still think I’ll get my big snow in February or March. You know…….this March will make the 25th anniversary of the big ‘Blizzard of ’93’. It think a celebratory 25th anniversary blizzard would be appropriate! 🙂
