HOT! But, relief is on the way!

This weekend: Heat

Next week: Some strong storms

Hot and humid will be the headline for today. Please be careful if you have to be out in that afternoon heat. It’s so easy to get sick when temps get this hot. Plus, the high humidity will make it difficult to cool off because your sweat can’t evaporate. That evaporation is what makes you feel so much cooler.

By tomorrow, the atmosphere will destabilize enough to bring us an increased risk of showers and storms. That chance will really amp up on Monday, as a weak front and disturbances begin to affect our area. Those showers and storms should stay with us through Tuesday.

By Wednesday, the rain chances should drop off before returning by the end of the week.

Be mindful of those storms, as they can contain a lot of lightning this time of year, as well as torrential rainfall and gusty winds. With a northwest flow aloft in place the beginning of next week, I’ll keep an eye on any storm complexes that may affect us from the Midwest.

On this day in 1998, Lawrenceburg recorded 12.26″ of rain in a two-day period of time! Lawrenceburg is located in southern Middle TN. This was the greatest two-day rainfall ever recorded at that time in Middle TN. Two people were killed, 20 were injured, and 122 homes were damaged or destroyed. Thirteen mobile homes and several small bridges were swept away and destroyed. The water and sewage plants were inoperable, leaving folks with no water.

I wast thinking about this and realized that this was just three months after the big tornado outbreak that April that produced Tennessee’s one and only ever recorded F-5 near Lawrenceburg. That was a rough year for Middle TN!

Here’s one to make you appreciate our summer weather (ha). On this day in 2005, Death Valley had its seventh consecutive day of high temperatures equal to or greater than 125 degrees! Yikes……

Don’t forget that you can early vote today until noon! Early voting is available every day next week from 8-5:00 at the Election Commission Office across from the Courthouse on Main Street.

You all have a great Saturday and stay cool!
