Evening update

Everything looks on track. If I were to change anything at this point it would be to say that storm timing might have backed up a bit. I would say to be weather-aware at and after 5:00 a.m. Other than that, things are looking on track.

Don’t be surprised if you here rain and thunder at any time tonight, and we can’t rule out a strong or briefly severe storm. Hail and gusty winds would be the main threats. This would be the result of a very dynamic warm front lifting north. The main threat, however, is for early Sunday morning.

We’re seeing some strong storms in southern Middle TN now. They have been severe at times. The atmosphere is much more unstable down there.

So, be ready to get up early in the morning. Some of these storms could pack a punch. Don’t be fooled by the rain-cooled air of this evening. Once the warm front arrives later tonight the winds will shift to the south and temps may rise to near 70 degrees by daybreak. Those southerly winds may become quite gusty, so be aware of that.

There have been tornadoes reported today but this has not become the outbreak it looked like it would be. That’s good news for us. It’s also good news that storms will hit more in the morning, and not in the middle of the night.

I’ll be watching it all. You all have a good evening.

Below is the current radar, showing some strong storms in southern Middle TN. Those are lifting north and are showing signs of weakening.

  1. WOW !!
HELLO MARK, WE’RE NEW HERE ON THE PLATEAU ( FROM MICHIGAN 19 YRS. BACK ; MOST RECENTLY FROM MAZATLAN, MEXICO ) BUT NOW LIVING AT LK. TANSI IN CROSSVILLE. MY WIFE JUST BUMBLED ONTO YOUR FB SITE ( I’M NOT ON FB ) AND SHARED YOUR WEBSITE WITH ME. IT APPEARS TO BE AN IMMEDIATE ANSWER TO OUR IMPENDING QUESTIONS RE : SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS IN OUR AREA.
WE ARE GRATEFUL YOU ARE THERE.
AS FOR SEVERE WEATHER HERE IN TANSI, I KNOW VERY LITTLE, EXCEPT THAT THE AREA IS SUJECT TO HARD WEATHER OUTBREAKS FROM TIME TO TIME, AND OF COURSE, HEAVEN FORBID, TORNADOS. I KNOW THERE ARE TORNADO WEATHER SIRENS HERE IN TANSI, BUT I’VE YET TO HERE THEM GO OFF. HOPEFULLY, I NEVER WILL. WE DO NOT HAVE A STORM CELLAR OR SHELTER, JUST A 3′ CRAWL SPACE. WE DO HAVE THE CHURCH BASEMENT NEAR THE TANSI P.O.A., HOWEVER, IF WE HAVE TIME TO GET TO IT.
I READ YOU GENERALLY GET ABOUT 10 -15 MINUTES WARNING TO TAKE COVER. IS THAT CORRECT ??

I WAS WONDERING, WHAT LOCAL RADIO STATIONS WOULD BE BEST TO LISTEN TO,IN ORDER TO MONITOR STORM UPDATES OR PROGRAM INTERUPTIONS FOR IMMEDIATE STORM WARNINGS.

I WAS ALSO WONDERING, SHOULD WE GET A WEATHER RADIO AND IF SO, DO YOU HAVE ANY RECOMENDATIONS ??

AND FINALLY, AS A COMMENT TO YOUR WEB / FB PAGE, YOU MIGHT CONSIDER ADDING THE CURRENT TIME TO YOUR WEATHER UPDATES SO USERS WILL KNOW EXACTLYN HOW OLD / CURRENT THEY ARE.

THANKS YOU FOR YOUR GOOD WORKS, AND I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR KNOWLEDGEABLE RESPONSE.

    YOUR NEW FRIENDS . . . . . ROGER & BARBARA NARVESEN

    1. Glad to have you all following along! You’re right, Tansi does have a history of tornadoes but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll ever have another one. A weather radio is your best bet. I HIGHLY recommend those over tornado sirens. The sirens rely on someone activating them and that is just too risky. Plus, they can be difficult to hear, esp if it’s raining and hailing. Both 102.5 and 105.7 are good radio stations to rely upon. They usually do wall-to-wall coverage when weather gets rough. Steve Norris is their broadcast meteorologist and he does a good job. I will certainly work on timing my alerts. I try to always do that but sometimes I forget. I always update the blog and I encourage folks to “follow” it and get the email updates when I issue a new message. Warnings usually allow 10-15 mins (or more) warning time but that varies with each storm. That depends on how close it is to your location before a warning is issued. I encourage folks to keep an eye on the radar and note the storms that are tracking in their direction. Again, it’s good to have you following along and I certainly appreciate the kind words!
