Weather Headlines
–A chance for some rain today, followed by drier conditions again
–Watching the tropics closely
Main threats
Just be safe in the heat, folks. Also, if any storm pops up just be mindful of the lightning.
Summary
Look for a chance of showers and storms today. Not all of us will see that activity. If you don’t get any rain today, and most of us probably won’t, there’s not any more rain in sight for the next several days.
Our hot and dry pattern continues next week.

Records
A violent hurricane swept across Cape Hatteras on this day in 1944. The storm would alter devastate portions of New Jersey and Long Island, as well as completely destroy the Atlantic City, NJ boardwalk. More than 400 people lost their lives, many of them at sea.
Tropics
The tropics are VERY active today! I couldn’t have picked a better lesson to teach to a STEM class of middle school ladies today.
We now have Tropical Storm Humberto. It now looks like that storm will stay at sea, as it curves northeast. The others will need to be watched in the coming days.
Today’s WeatherTAP WeatherWORD
Convection
The movement caused within a fluid by the tendency of hotter and therefore less dense material to rise, and colder, denser material to sink under the influence of gravity, which consequently results in transfer of heat.
WeatherTAP WeatherFACT
Many of the hurricanes of the Atlantic basin actually get their origins from the Sahara Desert. That’s a wild idea, right? The blistering heat of the desert sends big bubbles of hot air into the colder sky. This creates massive storm clouds near the coast. About 10% percent of the time, these systems evolve into hurricanes.
The map below shows all the hurricane tracks ever recorded. Notice how many come from the Sahara Desert region of Africa.
NASA Knowledge
We’ve gotten news that the spacecraft that India landed on the moon might not be a total loss after all. It appears that it may have landed at a tilt, which certainly complicates things, but communication may be restored. If that happens, the mission might be salvaged. Fingers crossed! Remember, they were ultimately going to release a rover that would collect very valuable data from the south pole of the moon.
News
There is a marginal risk for severe storms across the Nation’s mid-section today, but many of those storms should stay sub-severe.
You all have a great day!
