The gift of spring-like weather

Weather Headlines

–The next chance for showers arrives Sunday, esp for folks south of I-40

–Christmas week is looking very nice

Main threats

No widespread hazardous weather is expected.

We’ll see a nice Friday, with lots of sunshine and mild temps. There will be clouds moving in but they will not produce precipitation today.

The next best chance for precip will arrive Sunday. It still looks like the best chance for showers will be south of I-40. I’ll have to monitor that, though, as some models are becoming more aggressive with precip with this system.

Then, the clouds clear out on Monday. That’s set the stage for a very nice Christmas week forecast. Sure, many of us would like some snow, but Ma Nature has decided to gift us with some spring-like weather.

Another system may start to move in as early as Thursday.

Baldwin’s 7-Day forecast

On this day in 1836 a very powerful storm system sent a surge of bitter cold, arctic air southward. Temps across the Midwest dropped as much as 40 degrees in a matter of minutes! Many settlers died from hypothermia. To make matters even worse, the winds carrying that colder air were gusting to 70 mph.

Friday Weather Funny Day

NASA Knowledge

Boeing’s Starliner launched from Cape Canaveral early this morning. This is another space taxi that will take astronauts to space from American soil for the first time since 2011. This Starliner is Boeing’s version of SpaceX’s Dragon. I had the awesome opportunity to see Dragon launched this past March down at the Cape.

The launch of Starliner went off without a hitch, though there are problems developing in flight. Let’s hope they get those resolved. If successful, this puts us one more big step closer to launching astronauts from American soil, rather than continuing to lease Russian transportation.

Interestingly, the launch was seen from many, many miles away. The picture below is from coastal South Carolina. I’m even seeing reports of sighting as close as East TN!

Wx Hazards Across the Nation

The latest outlook for January, released by NOAA, indicates that there will be plenty of moisture around. As for temperatures, they show an equal chance for normal, above, or below normal temperatures. This could be good for snow if we can get some cold air down here again.

Always take extended outlooks with a grain of salt. It’s a stretch to predict weather out 5 days from now this time of year, much less several weeks out. Still, predicting trends does have a decent amount of accuracy. I guess we’ll see!

You all have a great day!
