Weather Headlines

–Saturday morning flurries possible

–Snowflakes could mix with rain showers Sunday night and Monday morning. No impacts expected at this time.

Main threats

No significant threats anticipated.

Summary

We’ll see lots of clouds today, with some morning snow flurries/rain drops falling from some of the clouds. No accumulation of wintry precip is expected to cause any travel impacts.

Another weak disturbance slides through Sunday night and Monday morning, with another chance for showers. Some of the showers could be mixed with snow. Again, no impacts are expected at this time. It looks like temperatures will stay in the 33-35 degree range, preventing accumulation of any wintry precip. I’ll keep an eye on that, though.

The next system moves in mid-week, with more light rain showers.

Records

On this day in 1837 folks across Vermont were treated to quite the Northern Lights display. The light was equal to that of a Full Moon. Snow and other objects were deeply tinged with a blood red hue. Blue, yellow, and white streamers were also observed.

What a sight that must have been! An Aurora Borealis is on my bucket list, for sure!

NASA Knowledge

The first cookies baked in space are bound for the Smithsonian. I’m not sure how they’ll preserve them, but I’m sure they’ll figure something out (ha).

Nothing has ever been baked in space before, so this was a first! Remember, I got to see this oven launched into space back in November at Wallops Island. On Earth, it takes about 16-18 minutes to bake these cookies in a 300-degree oven. On the International Space Station it ended up taking about two hours! That was very surprising.

It still has not been determined if baking times in space are longer or if there’s something wrong with the oven. Regardless, look for the cookies the next time you’re at the Smithsonian!
