For those of you heading to Knoxville or Nashville this morning, you need to allow a lot of extra time. Heavy rainfall is making that commute very difficult. Plus, if you head toward Nashville you may encounter issues with this morning’s tornado that struck East Nashville very hard. As you may already know, there are fatalities reported with that twister.
I’m not sure the tornado in Cookeville will impact interstate travel, but be aware that a tornado struck there, as well. There are three reported fatalities with that. The EMA is reporting that damage near Leanne Turpin and Highway 70. I’ve heard that the worst of the damage is north of Highway 70.
General thunderstorms continue for our area at this hour and the tornado watch will likely be allowed to expire at 6:00 a.m. It has been cancelled for those folks in Nashville.
Rain-cooled air should keep other storms from getting too severe. The greatest threat for a stronger storm should be south of I-40.
The cold front is now moving through the Nashville area and should be out of here by mid-morning.
Be careful out driving in the rain and storms this morning. We have a lot of cold air aloft, so frequent lightning and small hail are still possible.
