6:40 pm Storm Update

WHAT: Strong to severe t-storms

WHEN: Midnight to 3:00 am

The Storm Prediction Center has now issued a tornado watch for West TN until 2:00 am.

There have already been tornadoes confirmed in Arkansas. Radar showed this debris signature of a tornado earlier this afternoon near Jonesboro, Arkansas. I circled the debris signature. Talk about a scary situation!

Radar knows what rain, hail, and other forms of precip “looks” like. Whenever something like paper, insulation, leaves, etc. are detected it shows vastly different colors. This is how we can detect some tornadoes just using radar.

I’ll be tracking these storms as they move into West Tn this evening. The storms should form into a squall line that we’ll track across the state tonight. The storms should arrive here between midnight to 3:00 am.

Some of you have been watching the situation in northern Illinois. That continues to look like the first significant, widespread severe weather outbreak of the season. The SPC is even considering an upgrade to a rare high risk for that area, which is the highest of the severe weather risk categories. That new convective outlook comes out at 8:00 pm. That activity will remain well north of our area.

I’ll be up and tracking it all! You all have a good evening.
