Friday Evening Storm Update

WHAT: A few strong to possibly severe storms

WHERE: White and southern Cumberland Counties

WHEN: 10:00-11:00 pm tonight

Many of you will recall that I mentioned that much of the plateau was in the marginal risk for severe weather for today. That threat was in anticipation of storms that would develop either this afternoon or evening with a disturbance. That disturbance is now moving through Middle TN and it is indeed kicking up some strong storms. A few of them have been severe, with the possibility of damaging wind gusts.

I expect this line to get here around 10:00 pm. The strongest storms are likely to stay along and south of a line from Sparta to Crossville. Another way of saying this is that White County and the southern half of Cumberland County are at the greatest risk for strong storms. You all in Bledsoe County have a really good shot at some rain and thunder from this complex. Those of you in Fentress, Putnam and Overton Counties will likely get missed by these.

Just keep this in mind if you hear thunder rumbling tonight. This is NOT a widespread severe weather event and those of you who get anything from this will likely just see some heavy downpours of rain, gusty winds, and cloud-to-ground lightning.

Pictured below in the current radar, showing a complex of thunderstorms moving east to southeast across Middle TN this Friday evening. If you live south of the line I drew, you are at the greatest risk for one of these storms. We’re also seeing some stuff develop out ahead of the line. That activity is also below severe limits.
