Baldwin’s Hay Day Forecast

Today is looking like a good hay day, though there will likely be a storm or two around this afternoon/evening. By tomorrow, we’ll enter a pattern that features scattered afternoon/evening showers and storms. Most of us should stay dry each day. By Sunday and Monday, we go back to mainly an afternoon/evening shower or storm chance. All in all, this is a typical August forecast.

On this day in 1925 a late morning, severe hailstorm struck southeastern Iowa. The storm destroyed crops along a path that was six to ten miles wide and 75 miles long! The hail also injured and killed poultry and livestock, and caused a total of 2.5 million dollars damage. The hailstorm flattened fields of corn to such an extent that many had to leave their farms in search of other work. It was one of the worst hailstorms of record for the nation.

Long Range Outlook

The extended outlook for August 23 -27 is one that shows about average temps and rainfall.

Certain algae glows in the dark when caught in turbulent water, such as a wave crashing onto shore. This is called bioluminescence and is quiet common on some California beaches in the summer months. This photographer caught a big thunderstorm in the distance, as bioluminescence was occurring on the beaches at Santa Cruz this past weekend. Pretty cool, right? (Photo by @AlphaWolfePhoto)

NASA Nerdology

Monday was Computer Scientist Margaret Hamilton’s 84th birthday! As the leader of the software development team for NASA’s Apollo program, her contributions were invaluable to the success of the moon landing! What an impressive lady.

You all have a great day!
