Meteorologist Mark’s Severe Wx Concern

Threats

Widespread hazardous weather is not expected for the next week to ten days.

On This Day in Wx History

1985 – A guest on the top floor of a hotel in Seattle, Washington, was seriously injured while talking on the phone when lightning struck. The phone was a corded phone and the lightning traveled through the phone line.

Almanac

Yesterday’s National Temperature Extremes

High: 99° at Casa Grande & Tuscon, Arizona, as well as at Cibola, California & at Rio Grande Village, Texas

Low: -3°* at Bluff Creek, Montana

*The first negative reading of the season!

Tropical Outlook

Yesterday, Hurricane Epsilon became the fourth major hurricane of the season. Today, it is weakening and moving north and out to sea. Winds are now down to 100 mph.

Yesterday, models had backed off any development in the Caribbean, though many of us were skeptical of that. Now, we’re back to believing something will develop within the next week in that area. The good news now is that cold fronts may kick that development, whatever that may be, out to sea.

Today’s National Wx Hazards

An active day. Winter weather can be found across the northern plains and Upper Midwest. Accumulating snow and ice can be found there. Farther south, severe storms threaten eastern Iowa, while heavy rain threatens southern Wisconsin and parts of northern Michigan. Wildfires will threaten eastern New Mexico and the Panhandle of Texas, as well as northern California.

Tomorrow’s National Wx Hazards

Widespread unsettled weather can be found in the eastern US, associated with a cold frontal passage. Meanwhile, a winter storm hits the Northwest with accumulating mountain snowfall.

 8 – 14 Day Outlook

The trend continues to be for drier and cooler weather across much of the country for the end of next week and for several days afterwards. November will start off chilly!

Weather Shots

Hurricane Epsilon made quite the appearance on satellite last night, as it strengthened into a major cat 3 hurricane. Quite an appearance, indeed!

NASA Nerdology

From 1990 to 1994, NASA’s Magellan space probe used imaging radar to create highly detailed maps of Venus. Pictured here in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-30) in 1989. Magellan was the first planetary spacecraft launched from a space shuttle.
