Check out this cool cloud pic, taken by @babowling12, over Sharp Top, Virginia yesterday. That’s called a Lenticular cloud. They are often most pronounced across higher mountain ranges but several folks got some good pictures of them yesterday over the southern Appalachians. These clouds form when the air is stable but, when forced to rise up a mountain, condenses into a cloud. The air has to have enough moisture to form a cloud, otherwise the air just rises but you can’t see it (ie turbulence). Lenticular clouds are stationary and have been mistaken for UFOs.

This photo, taken in 1998, shows the Mars Polar Lander being prepared for testing. The lander was designed to test new technologies and dig for water ice, but on this day in 1999, it sent one last signal just before entering the atmosphere and has not been heard from since! Win some….lose some…
