Meteorologist Mark’s Wx Thoughts (New!)

I started to do a “snow scale” for tonight but, in the end, decided not to. There are some light precip chances coming tonight and I do wonder if temps will warm enough for it to be rain. I’m going with rain/snow mix, very light, especially toward Friday morning. I’ll keep an eye on this and I’ll issue a special blog post later today if anything looks more trivial with this. The main concern I would have would be for a light wintry mix in the morning that could cause a slick spot or two on area roads.

The next chance for snow comes Friday night and Saturday and my confidence is increasing that we’ll see some light accumulation. This is a classic snow shower situation for the plateau and I’ve seen this so many times. Accumulations should stay on the lighter side of things. Those breezy northwest winds will have a bite to them!

Next week looks unsettled and precip timing and types is a challenge. Just stay tuned for any changes that may come. Right now I’m not seeing any big winter storms, though.

Wx Threats for the Next 7 Days

Light precip overnight could mix or even change to snow from time to time tonight and early Friday morning. Precip amounts are expected to be very light, with little to no accumulation expected. I’ll add a snow scale for this, in a special blog post later today, if anything changes with this.

More light snow or snow showers are possible Friday night and Saturday. Minor accumulation is possible.

Meteorologist Mark’s Snow Scale

On This Day in Wx History

1989 – A winter storm spread snow and sleet and freezing rain from the Middle Mississippi Valley to the Northeast. Freezing rain in West Virginia caused fifteen traffic accidents in just a few minutes in Charleston. Tennessee was deluged with up to 7.5 inches of rain. Flooding near Clarksville, Tennessee, left water in the streets as high as car doors.

Almanac

Yesterday’s National Temperature Extremes

High: 81° at Pala, Santee, & Beverly Hills, San Luis Obispo, & Oceano County Airport, California

Low: -11° at Gunnison, Colorado

Today’s National Wx Hazards

Freezing rain will affect areas from northern Illinois to Minnesota today. That wintry mix will eventually turn to heavy snowfall on the Minnesota/Iowa border. More accumulating snowfall can be found all across North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.

Tomorrow’s National Wx Hazards

Freezing rain will threaten areas of western Virginia and North Carolina, while accumulating snow falls across much of the Midwest.

 Weather Shots

I took this picture yesterday, as snow was melting on my dad’s old smokehouse roof. It started forming a wavy pattern that looked really cool.

NASA Nerdology

In January of 2016, NASA’s Juno spacecraft, en route to Jupiter, became humanity’s most distant solar-powered spacecraft, about 493 million miles (793 million kilometers) from the sun. The record was previously held by the Rosetta spacecraft, which had visited a comet in 2012.
