Another storm system will affect our area this weekend, possibly ending as a bit of light snow for some of us. As usual, it’s a came of cat-n-mouse with the cold air and moisture. Sometimes the cat (cold air) catches the mouse (moisture), and sometimes it doesn’t. For those of us who want snow….well, let’s just say the mouse gets little sympathy. (ha)

Friday is looking like one of the better days we’ve seen in some time. If you can get outside I would certainly try to do that!
The next storm system will bring us rainfall this weekend. That’s not looking like heavy rain but it will be a good soaking. We need it to boost our January rainfall totals. We’re over two inches in the hole for January precip.
That precip could end as some light snow Sunday night. Only light accumulation is expected. Yet another storm system arrives by Thursday (rain).
On This Day in Wx History
1922 – The “Knickerbocker” storm immobilized the city of Washington D.C. The storm produced 28 inches of snow in 32 hours, and the heavy snow caused the roof of the Knickerbocker movie theatre to collapse killing 96 persons.
No offense to those lives lost but that must have been an incredibly good movie to brave that storm for!

Today’s National Wx Hazards
Accumulating snowfall is possible all along the spine of the Appalachians today, as northwest flow interacts with the mountains to produce snow. Lake-Effect snow will fall around the Great Lakes Region. More heavy snowfall is expected in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, along with flooding rains in the valley regions.
Tomorrow’s National Wx Hazards
Snow continues out west, though it finally begins to taper off a bit. Never the less, travel will be treacherous through many of those area roads.
Weather Shots
Lately, California has been getting slammed with mountain snows and valley rains. Snow is piling up by the feet and rain is flooding areas that haven’t seen flooding in quite some time. The culprit is a steady stream of moisture coming in from the Pacific, as seen here on satellite. We call that stream an “atmospheric river.” Like a river, it transports vast amounts of moisture inland.

Yesterday was the 54th anniversary of one of the worst days in NASA’s history.
Astronaut Buzz Aldrin tweeted, “Fifty-four years ago we tragically lost the crew of Apollo 1– Gus Grissom, Roger Chafee and Ed White when a launch pad fire claimed their lives. Their ultimate sacrifice made us even more determined than ever to step foot. We must never forget them.”
