Winter Weather Update (Issued Wed at 2:00 pm)

I sat in on a NWS conference call earlier today. Here’s a few points I’d like to pass along to you.

First of all, we are NOT expecting an ice storm through Friday on the Cumberland Plateau. That’s not to say we won’t have areas of light icing, especially around northern Overton County and northern Fentress County. Light icing could occur in those areas both tonight and tomorrow night.

In fact, all of us could see some light icing Thursday night, but there are no indications that any of us on the plateau will see ice storm conditions from this storm system. Folks in Kentucky and areas west of Nashville have that to worry about.

By Saturday, another system will move in and that could produce some freezing rain, sleet and/or snow areawide. I’m monitoring that closely. That precip event continues to look light and would affect mainly roadways, especially elevated surfaces.

By early next week, a more significant storm will move out of the Gulf of Mexico and that could bring a variety of wintry precip to the area, some of which could be significant. That, too, is worth watching. The main threat time looks to be Monday night.

KEY POINTS:

–Ice storm conditions are not expected across the plateau through Friday (ice storm is defined as more than 1/4″ of ice)

Light icing is possible across northern Fentress and northern Overton Counties tonight

–Rain, some of it heavy, will fall across the plateau from tonight through Thursday

Light icing is possible for all of us Thursday night, as colder air moves in

Light icing/snow is once again possible late Friday night and Saturday

–A winter storm may affect the region early next week with a variety of precip, some of which could be heavy

Prepare now for possible wintry conditions. Don’t have a generator? You better go get one if you want one. They’re selling out fast. I bought one this morning.

Take the precautions you would take if a winter storm were coming. Fill the car with gas. Have batteries charged up and ready. I’ll issue more advice as we get closer to the winter weather events of the coming days. If you need a portable battery charger for your cell phone, I highly recommend this from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MQSMEEE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I ordered one a few years ago and I love it! I give it as Christmas presents to this day and everyone uses it and loves it. Get one today, if you can!

An interesting observation…..temps across southern Middle TN are in the 70s, while temps are in the 30s just northwest of Nashville.

You all take care and I’ll issue another update this evening!
