Winter Wx Update & a very special rover lands today!

I just sat in on a NWS conference call and they have decided to drop the winter storm warning and replace it with a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY. That advisory is in effect through 9:00 pm. Wintry precip will end by 9:00 pm, though flurries will likely linger through the night and into the morning.

Temps will drop to around 15-20 degrees tonight, so a very cold night is in store for us. Refreezing will be an issue tonight.

Like I said, I do expect some light snow to move in this afternoon/evening. This will likely affect the plateau most between 3:00 – 7:00 pm. That snow is developing nicely across West TN. Therefore, confidence in accumulation has been raised. Never the less, this should be a low-impact event, with many of us seeing under an inch of new snow. Some of you may not see anything. This will likely aggravate existing road conditions, especially on those untreated backroads.

Radar shows that snow, as it continues to develop and push east and northeast from West TN. The blue-outlined counties are those under Winter Weather Advisories.

I wanted to take a moment and share some very exciting NASA news! Today, a new rover will be landing on Mars!!! The rover is named Perseverance and it will help pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet.

The rover will be capable of turning the Carbon Dioxide-laden air of Mars into breathable oxygen. How cool is that? That technology will allow astronauts to have their own oxygen source when we get there within the next decade. The rover is also equipped with a helicopter, which will be a first. We have never flown anything like that on another planet, not even the Moon. And, of course, the rover has a weather station that will send us the current conditions for where it is at. That’s pretty darn cool, too! We have other weather stations on Mars but this one will be more sophisticated.

This is a journey that Perseverance has been on for about seven months. We hope, we sincerely hope, for a smooth landing and a very successful mission! Watch live coverage of the landing at https://www.nasa.gov/content/live-landing-of-the-mars-2020-perseverance-rover, beginning at 1:15 CDT today. This is something the kids in your household may be interested in! They may even be working on this rover someday….on Mars!
