Meteorologist Mark’s Wx Concerns

Widespread hazardous weather is not expected, but any storm that develops in the heat of the afternoon this week could pack a bit of a punch, with gusty winds, cloud-to-ground lightning and brief, torrential rainfall.

Almanac for Yesterday

Tropics

It looks like Elsa will remain a tropical storm for the rest of her life. Landfall for the US should come Monday night for the Keys, and then again Wednesday morning for northern Florida. The strongest winds and heaviest rainfall are often to the right of the center (east side) of a tropical system, therefore much of Florida will experience the worse that Elsa has to offer. Thankfully, this is a tropical storm and not a hurricane. Never the less, gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and even a few tornadoes can be expected for the sunshine state, as Elsa moves through.

Unfortunately, this complicates the work being done on the collapsed condo near Miami. More than likely, work will halt as this system passes through.

I should note that the effects of Elsa will stay far from the plateau. However, we may see some pretty tropical clouds to our east by Wednesday.

Weather SnapShots

Normally, the NWS Nashville releases a weather balloon in the morning and again in the evening. However, with Tropical Storm Elsa moving toward the Gulf this week, NOAA asked the office to release a special afternoon launch yesterday. This extra data helps computer models and forecasters better understand the atmosphere and to better forecast the path and intensity of Elsa.

I thought the balloon should have been red, white, and blue. (ha)
