On This Day in Wx History

1995- Six people attending an outdoor carnival in Murfreesboro are injured when lightning strikes a nearby power pole. A large tree is destroyed by a separate lightning strike.

Yesterday’s National Temperature Extremes

High:  115° at Death Valley, California

Low:   35° at Watton, Michigan

Thirsty Thursday

A rural African woman may walk up to 10 miles to gain access to fresh water. An American rarely walks more than a few feet.

Today’s Tennessee Weather

Look for hazy, hot, and humid conditions today. An old frontal boundary will drift northward and produce scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms across southern West Tennessee, including the Memphis and Jackson areas. The rest of us will just be hot and hazy. Afternoon highs will approach or even touch 90 degrees for most today, though the humidity will make it feel much hotter. Keep in mind that air quality alerts are active once again for the Nashville area today. Limit outdoor activities if you have respiratory issues.

Tonight’s Tennessee Weather

Evening storms will dissipate across southern West Tennessee after sunset. Statewide, skies will be hazy and the air will be humid overnight. That warm and humid air will keep low temps in the mid to upper 60s for most.

Tomorrow’s Tennessee Weather

Most of us stay dry, hot, and humid for our Friday. A few afternoon and evening storms will likely develop across Western and southern portions of the state. Otherwise, look for partly to mostly sunny skies and high temps around 90 degrees. Keep in mind that humidity will make it feel much warmer, so be safe in the heat.

Drought Monitor

The drought monitor is updated each Thursday.

Weather Snapshots

The sunset was spectacular yesterday! The smoke from western wildfires gave us quite the sight. Look for much of the same this evening! The sun sets at around 8:00 CDT.

NASA Nerdology

On this day in 1962, Mariner 1 launched. Mariner 1 was NASA’s first attempt to send a spacecraft to Venus, but it was destroyed by the Range Safety Officer about 290 seconds after launch when it veered off course. I don’t know about you, but I have a feeling that Range Safety Officer had a lot of fun that day. (haha)

Atlas-Agena rocket launching at night

You all have a great day and keep lookin’ up!

  1. A minor correction… In your hay day report, “bail away” should be “bale away”, unless there’s more rain in the forecast than what we’re expecting! Keep up the great work!

    1. Thanks, Sharon! The English language and its tricky words. Ha
