Today’s Stats

Almanac for Yesterday

On This Day in Wx History

1970 – The greatest natural disaster of record for Arizona occurred. Unprecedented rains caused rivers in central Arizona to rise five to ten feet per hour, sweeping cars and buildings as far as 30 to 40 miles downstream. Flooding claimed the lives of 23 persons, mainly campers, and caused millions of dollars damage. Water crested 36 feet above normal near Sunflower, Arizona. Workman’s Creek was deluged with 11.40 inches of rain in 24 hours to establish a state record. Moisture from Pacific Tropical Storm Norma was to blame for the severe flooding.

Yesterday’s National Temperature Extremes

High:  109° at Palm Springs, California

Low:   20° at both Choteau, Montana and Copper Basin, Idaho

Tropics

The system that many of us have been watching in the Caribbean over the past several days now appears to pose a threat to the northern Gulf Coast. This is not expected to become anything significant, as far as wind is concerned, but it could bring flooding rainfall to areas near the coast. This would be especially bad for areas cleaning up from Ida on Louisiana’s southern coastline. This threat is expected to come by Tuesday.

Larry is now a major hurricane and spinning out at sea. Notice that the cone takes Larry to Bermuda. I’m tellin’ ya, that place may look small on the map but Bermuda seems to do a great job attracting tropical storms and hurricanes! The only threat Larry poses to the East Coast of the US is from deadly rip currents.

Check out Larry on satellite! What a beautiful and powerful storm. We like the ones we can admire at sea, with no immediate threats to land.

Each weather newsletter just keeps getting better! Try out https://meteorologistmarkpro.com/ today! You can even try a free sample before you sign up. I’m working hard on next week’s newsletter! I’ll have an article that discusses the meteorology behind the Crossville hailstorm of August 1990. I’ll also talk about the man who rode a parachute through a thunderstorm. Perhaps the most interesting of all is my article on why some folks count the number of August fogs. I’ll also discuss what people have found with this year’s August fogs! Register to get your letter today! You’ll be glad you did! Keep in mind that proceeds from these letters goes to support my education outreach programs, as well as the cost of maintaining these sites and the apps.

You all have a great day and keep lookin’ up!
