Today’s Stats

Almanac for Yesterday

On This Day in Wx History
1989 – Showers and thunderstorms produced locally heavy rain in the Central Appalachians. Virgie, Virginia received 2.60 inches of rain during the evening hours, and Bartlett, Tennessee was deluged with 2.75 inches in just ninety minutes. Heavy rain left five cars partially submerged in high water in a parking lot at Bulls Gap, Tennessee. Thunderstorms over central North Carolina drenched the Fayetteville area with four to eight inches of rain between 8 PM and midnight. Flash flooding, and a couple of dam breaks, claimed the lives of two persons, and caused ten million dollars damage. Hugo, churning over the waters of the Caribbean, strengthened to a cat 4 hurricane, packing winds of 150 mph.
Yesterday’s National Temperature Extremes
High: 112° at both Death Valley & Ocotillo Wells, California
Low: 16° at Mackay, Idaho
Tropics
The tropics are active and about to get even more active. The good news is that there are no immediate threats to land. I’ll keep an eye on things!
“Nicholas” is now a depression just sitting on the Texas/Louisiana border. That system will continue to bring heavy rainfall to that area.

Sun & Moon

Today’s Tennessee Weather
Showers and thunderstorms will fill the radars across Tennessee today. Some of that rainfall could be heavy, especially across Middle Tennessee, so be safe if you’re out and about today. Flash flood watches are in effect for much of Middle Tennessee for today, so be aware of rapidly rising waters with heavier downpours. Afternoon highs will be near 80 degrees statewide.

Tonight’s Tennessee Weather
Scattered showers and thunderstorms continue for the overnight hours. Low temps will be in the 60s statewide.

Tomorrow’s Tennessee Weather
A warm and humid Thursday will lead to more shower and thunderstorm chances, especially in the afternoon. Those showers and storms will be most common across East Tennessee, where rain chances are about 50%. Rain chances across the rest of the state are set at 30%. Afternoon highs will climb into the mid 80s where rain chances are lower, and only around 80 degrees across East Tennessee.
