MM’s Wx Concerns

With so many outdoor activities planned for this time of year, it’s always a good idea to review lightning safety information. Remember, if you can hear it thunder you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Keep in mind heavy downpours the next several days could lead to localized flash flooding.

Today’s Stats

Almanac for Yesterday

On This Day in Wx History

1926 – The great “”Miami Hurricane”” produced winds reaching 138 mph which drove ocean waters into the Biscayne Bay drowning 135 persons. The eye of the hurricane passed over Miami, at which time the barometric pressure reached 27.61 inches. Tides up to twelve feet high accompanied the hurricane, which claimed a total of 372 lives.

Yesterday’s National Temperature Extremes

High:  106° at both Death Valley & Rio Grande Village, Texas

Low:   11° at both Choteau, Montana & Stanley, Idaho

Tropics

The tropics remain interesting. Tropical Storm Odette is moving out to sea, while two more areas will need to be watched. The orange-shaded region looks to be the least of the threats, as it aims northward into open ocean waters. That red-shaded area will likely become Tropical Storm Peter by the end of the weekend. That one will need to be tracked.
