MM’s Saturday Weather Forecast for Feb 26

Monitoring a Chance for Light Snow

School Visit

I was at Homestead Elementary yesterday morning talking with the 6th graders. What an outstanding group of kids! We talked about the snows we’ve had, the coming severe weather season, how to stay safe in storms, and what it’s like to storm chase. They even gave me some really cool t-shirts (Thank you Brooke Scruggs!).

I’ll be at Brown Elementary to visit the Kindergarteners this coming Friday! I’m looking forward to that!

MM’s Winter Wx Concerns

On This Day in Wx History

1910 – Parts of Washington State were in the midst of a storm which produced 129 inches of snow at Laconia between the 24th and the 26th, a single storm record for the state. A series of storms, which began on the 23rd, led to a deadly avalanche on the first of March. By late on the 28th, the snow had changed to rain, setting the stage for disaster.

1972 – The Buffalo Creek disaster occurred in the Buffalo Creek Hollow of Logan County in West Virginia. A coal slag dam on the Middle Fork of Buffalo Creek burst sending a fifty foot wall of water down a narrow valley killing 125 persons and causing 51 million dollars damage. Three days of rain atop a six inches snow cover prompted the dam break.

Saving our Hardwoods

Please help us work to save the hardwoods in the Catoosa Wildlife Management Area for present and future generations. Will you consider signing the petition to save our hardwoods from being harvested at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSflavN4JIaw4nN18fYF3-pw9GMYYo2-D5D5Di6kB0hF7uF1SQ/viewform.

An informational meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 8, at 6:00 pm at the Community Complex. Marvin Bullock from the White County Chamber of Commerce will give a very helpful presentation on how to make your voices heard. His work to save the Bridgestone-Firestone Wilderness area of White County has given him a wealth of information to share. Representatives from the TWRA have also been invited.

I’m working on a Facebook page dedicated to saving the Catoosa hardwoods. Stay tuned for that!
