1954- One of the hottest summers on record continues its strangle-hold on the mid state. Nashville’s high hits 97 degrees, Crossville gets to 93.
1947 – The eye of a hurricane passed directly over New Orleans, and the barometric pressure dipped to 28.61 inches. The hurricane killed 51 persons, and caused 110 million dollars damage. It produced wind gusts to 155 mph while making landfall over Fort Lauderdale, Florida, two days earlier.
1893 – New Zealand becomes the first country to grant all women the right to vote. (The first woman to get a PhD in the U.S. happened in 1853. Women weren’t given right to vote in U.S. until 1920).
