High, thin clouds blocked my view of any exhaust from the rocket launch early this morning. At least the crescent moon in the eastern sky was beautiful! It was actually worth getting up for this morning.

This forecast is tailor-made for the Cumberland Plateau by Meteorologist Mark Baldwin each day!

Low humidity, breezy winds, and ongoing drought conditions will create an elevated wildfire risk today on the plateau. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. As a reminder, you must get a burning permit in order to legally burn anything outdoors.

That wildfire threat will continue on Wednesday.

By Thursday, we’ll see rain chances increase a bit as a weak front moves across the area. Not all of us will see rain, but at least there’ll be some chances.

Friday and much of Saturday both look dry but rain chances increase again Saturday night. This may be our best shot of rain in the forecast period, though rainfall totals still look to be around 1/2 inch. Hopefully that amount trends upward

Threat Outlook

Several areas of concern can be found throughout the shaded regions. The worst of the storms are expected across western Oklahoma and again in an area from eastern Iowa to southern Michigan.

I hesitated to post about this, because the chance is rather small, but the timing of a rocket launch in the morning may make it possible for us to see the exhaust from the rocket lit by the sun. This has happened before here, though it is unusual. The rocket launches at 4:33 a.m. and would be visible here about five minutes later. They call these “space jellyfish” because that’s kinda what they look like.

Again, IF you’re up at that time it could be something to look for. I’d look southeast.

They can look similar to the photo below. From this distance, it would be much smaller and look farther away.

And this is the forecast for the possible visibility of the rocket’s exhaust.

This forecast is tailor-made for the Cumberland Plateau by Meteorologist Mark Baldwin each day!

A disturbance passing through today is overperforming and producing some showers across the region today! I usually don’t like missing a forecast but I’ll take a miss on this one if it gets us some showers. These showers should help lower pollen levels today, as well.

The showers, unfortunately, won’t amount to much at all. The biggest benefit is that the clouds and higher humidity levels will at least keep us from getting drier today.

The next best chance for showers comes Thursday. Right now, that’s not looking too impressive but hopefully those chances will trend upward.

Our next chance for rain comes over the weekend. Right now, those chances look to be about 50/50. Let’s all hope, even though it’s the weekend, that those chances trend upward. Drought conditions continue to worsen across the plateau.

Threat Outlook

The greatest threat for severe storms for today is across the Upper Midwest. A regional tornado outbreak is expected there today (especially in the orange-shaded region).

Well, I ended up getting one of those itty bitty showers that we had a 20% chance of getting yesterday! My gauge collected 0.37″ of rain. I was very grateful.

Unfortunately, the outlook for rain looks bleak for the plateau. Even the rain chances at the end of this week are trending downward. Hopefully, we’ll see that trend turn around.

The biggest news today is the elevated wildfire risk.

We have a chance for showers on Thursday. Hopefully that chance doesn’t trend drier than it already has.

Threat Outlook

There is an elevated risk for wildfires in our region for Sunday. Low humidity, drought conditions, and gusty winds will cause that fire danger to be elevated.

The greatest threat for severe storms for today can be found in Texas.

Dry conditions will allow pollen counts to soar. Hopefully we can get some showers the end of this week to wash that pollen out of the air.
