MM’s Forecastfor the Plateau
Local matters, especially when it comes to your weather forecast!Bringing you your local weather since 2017!
This forecast is tailor-made for the Cumberland Plateau by Meteorologist Mark Baldwin each day!
Last night and this morning’s rain has been disappointing for many of us. While we’ve seen showers across the area, many of them have just not amounted to much. We continue to have shower and storm chances today. Fingers crossed!
Sunday looks warm and humid. We should stay dry.
Our next best chance for rain comes Monday night. That rain comes with a risk for severe storms, so we’ll have to watch that closely. A line of strong to severe storms could impact the region Monday night, carrying the threat for a damaging straight-line wind gust. Hopefully we get some beneficial rainfall with that system.
Next week has several rain chances and we’ll hope the guidance doesn’t trend drier with that rain. We desperately need the rain!
The risk for below normal temps the first week of May continues to increase.

I have not changed these threats from yesterday’s update, as I don’t see a need to at this time. Stay tuned for updates, as I’m sure some of these threats will increase or decrease as we get closer to Monday.
The SPC has issued a moderate risk for severe storms today across southeast Oklahoma. Giant hail is likely with the strongest storms, along with the risk of tornadoes, some of which could be significant.
By Monday, the severe threat moves much closer to the plateau, with that threat arriving here overnight Monday. For now, the plateau is in the lowest of the five risk categories. Storms will be most severe back toward the Mississippi River. As they progress eastward after sunset, they will evolves into a line of strong storms. That line is expected to gradually weaken as it crosses Middle TN. Whatever is leftover is what we will get on the plateau, which will likely consists of gusty winds and rain. Hopefully, we’ll at least get rain.
The greatest tornado risk, shown below, continues to be focuses well to our northwest. Our tornado risk isn’t zero here on the plateau, so we’ll still have to watch this closely.

Most of us should stay dry today, with the exception of those of you who may get an isolated shower or storm this afternoon/evening.
After midnight tonight, we’ll see rain chances increase for everyone. Hopefully we call get some rain overnight. Any storms that we get are not expected to be severe. That rain threat stays with us through the first half of the day Saturday, with only a chance for a shower the rest of the day. It will be a very warm and muggy weekend.
Sunday looks dry and most of Monday looks dry before a powerful storm system brings rain and storms back into the region Monday night. Some of those storms may be severe.
The Climate Prediction Center is monitoring a risk for below-normal temps the first week of May. Normal lows for the plateau this time of year are in the upper 40s.

The greatest severe weather threats today from the Storm Prediction Center can be found across southeast Oklahoma and northeast Texas (Arklatex region). West TN may end up getting severe storms too, but those will stay well to our southwest.
The greatest risk for tornadoes, shown below, continues to be for West TN for Monday and Monday night. Still, our chance isn’t zero, so we’ll continue to monitor closely. Hopefully, we just get leftover thunder and rain.
Mars and Jupiter pairings with the Moon will be seen in the evenings, while Saturn’s will be seen in the morning. Awesome night sky conditions are likely the 27th with a new moon and clear skies.

This forecast is tailor-made for the Cumberland Plateau by Meteorologist Mark Baldwin each day!
Our nice weather continues for another day.
We won’t see a chance of rain enter the picture until Friday. Even then, it’s only a 20% chance for an isolated shower or storm. Rain chances increase Friday night and into Saturday. Hopefully we can get some beneficial rainfall.
The threat for severe storms on Friday has diminished and it wasn’t that great to start with. Rumbles of thunder are possible but severe storms are not expected.
Rain impacts the first half of the day Saturday much more than the second half. We’ll still have a risk for a shower or storm the second half of the day but that chance will drop to 30%.
Sunday looks warm and muggy, with an isolated shower or storm. That isolated storm chance stays with us through Monday.
By Monday night, a powerful storm system moves into the area bringing rain and storms. Some of those storms may be severe and I’m keeping a close eye on that.
The Climate Prediction Center is monitoring a risk for below-normal temps the end of April into the start of May. Normal lows for the plateau this time of year is upper 40s.

The timing of this threat has changed since yesterday’s forecast. Friday night is what we’ll have to be mindful of. I’ll do a special update this evening to give you all the latest on this and to get a better sense of timing.
If you saw my special update last night, you’ll know that I’m not too surprised that the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) scaled back the marginal threat area for Friday night. That threat should stay well to the west of the Cumberland Plateau.
In this morning’s update, the SPC increased the threat for severe weather on Monday for portions of Missouri and Illinois. That threat still reaches into Middle TN and we’ll be mindful of how much of this holds together as it moves our way from the west.
This map shows the number of tornado warnings issued by each NWS forecast office in the country for this entire year (as of April 21). The Morristown office for East TN has issued zero. The Nashville office has issued only four warnings for middle TN. Remarkably, the Huntsville, Alabama, office has only issued two warnings (they’re normally VERY active). I can’t remember a quieter spring. It’s also hard to remember a drier one.
Mars and Jupiter pairings with the Moon will be seen in the evenings, while Saturn’s will be seen in the morning. Awesome night sky conditions are likely the 27th with a new moon and clear skies.
