A flash flood warning has been issued for Cumberland County, parts of eastern Putnam County (Monterey area), southwest Fentress County, and southern Overton County until 8:45 pm. That area being warned can be seen highlighted in green on the map below. Many folks in the warning have picked up a LOT of rain in a short period of time. I picked up an inch in about 20 minutes here in Rinnie in northern Cumberland County. Please be safe if out and about and watch for flooded out roads, etc.
Never cross a flooded road, especially if the water is rapidly moving.
We’ve got some strong storms in the area but nothing is currently severe. Be mindful of that flash flood threat that we have today. Also, be careful around that dangerous cloud to ground lightning.
At 4:45, radar is active with several areas of storms, many of which are producing lots of lightning and very heavy rainfall. Be safe if out and about. As the sun sets, these storms will weaken and eventually dissipate. I’ll keep an eye on things and let you know if anything becomes severe.
Here at home, weak high pressure struggles for control while heat, humidity, frontal boundaries, and the topography of the plateau outweigh the drying effects the high pressure tries to have. A very unsettled pattern can be seen across the eastern U.S., with scattered shrs and storms, mainly in the afternoon, impact a huge piece of real estate.
Widespread life-threatening flash and urban flooding continues in south-central Texas, with considerable flooding impacts possible across central Texas. Wildfire smoke is impacting air quality across much of the Great Lakes region into southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic. Monsoonal thunderstorms may produce isolated to scattered flash flooding across the Southwest into the Great Basin.
The Crossville Airport is the official reporting station for the plateau.

Overall, much of the state improved with this update! Last week, 82% of our state was in drought. This week, only 55% of our state is in drought. That’s aa incredible improvement! Here on the plateau, results are mixed. Portions of our northern areas have been removed from drought, while other, including nearly all of Cumberland County, remain in severe drought.

Today’s drought update, seen below in this post, shows improvement over parts of the plateau! Additional rain chances in the coming days will help us out even more. Many of us remain more than half a foot of water below normal.
More unsettled weather continues to impact the eastern U.S. Warm and humid conditions, combined with disturbances and the topography of the plateau, will continue to enhance storm chances in our neck of the woods.
Widespread, life-threatening considerable flash flooding is expected in south-central Texas through at least Friday. Catastrophic river flooding and rapid rises on small streams and typically dry washes are expected in the Texas Hill Country. Wildfire smoke is impacting air quality across much of the Great Lakes region into the Northeast U.S. with Air Quality Alerts in effect.Friday.
