Special update issued Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at 6:40 pm

It has been interesting watching the radar and following the thoughts of the Storm Prediction Center this evening. There are numerous storms in Kentucky associated with a complex of storms that has been ongoing for many hours. This is the complex that I had been worried about skirting the northern areas of the plateau (along and north of a line from Livingston to Jamestown to Oneida). It now looks like the complex will be impacting areas just to the east of us, with those of you in Oneida still not being out of the woods.
The SPC has issued severe t-storm watches for southeast Kentucky and again for areas east of Knoxville. They considered a watch for portions of the plateau but they’re beginning to think the bulk of the threat will stay east of Cumberland and Fentress counties.
In an environment like ours…so hot and humid…storms may start developing westward. There are no clear indications of that just yet, but it’s something I’ve seen happen in the past.
So, for now, the closest severe t-storm watches are just across the border in Kentucky. If they extend those I’ll let you know. I’ll also let you know if there’s something that looks concerning to me, regardless of what the SPC does.

Radar has been very active in Kentucky this evening! Storms are sliding southeast and still may skirt northern areas of the plateau.


It continues to look as though straight-line winds will be the main threat with any severe storm. However, we can never dismiss the flash flood risk when it’s this humid outside.
