Special update issued August 12 at noon
Our atmosphere is heating up and destabilizing. This is increasing the risk for storms to become severe. We’ll be weather aware through the afternoon and evening. Like yesterday, localized damaging wind gusts will be possible with any storm. Those gusts are often so brief and localized that a warning never goes out. With soils being so wet and trees being lush with foliage, it doesn’t take as much wind to push one over.
Computer models aren’t doing a good job with today’s forecast, but thankfully not all of us need those models to make a forecast. ha Conditions are ripe for storms today and we’ll be watching those radars for any that develop. In addition, it still looks as though a complex of storms will threaten us again from the north, similar to last night.
Winds aloft are quite brisk and that can help get storms going, as well. If you ever look up on a hot summer day and you notice the clouds are moving nicely across the sky, you should know that storm chances are higher. Those faster winds up there cause our pressure to lower down here (air rises up to replace the air being carried away aloft).
I’ll keep an eye on things and let you know if there’s anything you need to know about.
For this update, I’ll start the concern meter! We’ll see how my concern changes with today’s threat as we go through the day.
