Things continue to slowly improve for us, folks. There are still some showers and storms on the radar but nothing has been severe for a while now. The storms in East TN are taking a lot of the energy, in addition to all the showers and storms we’ve already had on the plateau.

I suspect our severe t-storm watch will be cancelled within the next couple of hours. I’ll still keep an eye on things, just to be safe.

The trend is in our favor!

While East TN is dealing with numerous severe storms at this hour, our storms are on a generally weakening trend. I continue to believe that you folks in Overton, Pickett, and Fentress country are through with the severe storm threat. Those of you west of Cookeville re likely through with the threat, as well.

As for the rest of us, things should slowly improve as we go through the rest of the evening. The numerous showers and storms that fired off this afternoon have really helped stabilize our atmosphere.

Still, we have a very humid airmass across the plateau and for those of us along and south of a line from Cookeville to Monterey to Wartburg we may still get a strong storm or two over the next hour.

I’ll keep an eye on things!

I’m feeling much better about the plateau now that we’ve seen so many showers and storms erupt at once this afternoon. It was quite amusing to step out at noon and see hardly a cloud in the sky. However, the sky was very milky and you just knew that at any moment….storms would erupt. Sure enough, from 1:30 to 2:00 we saw storms erupting all across the plateau. It’s always better for the majority of us to get a storm, rather than there be one storm hogging all the energy. Those isolated storms are the ones that can really pack a punch.

I won’t say we’re completely out of the woods, especially with a strong storm moving into southern Cumberland County right now. This strong storm will impact parts of Crossville, Tansi, and Crab Orchard areas through 4:15. Basically anyone south of Crossville needs to be on the lookout for the storms moving into the southern part of the county.

I’d say those of you in Overton, Pickett, and Fentress counties are through with the severe threat. The severe t-storm watch remains in effect until 9:00 cdt but it will likely be cancelled much earlier than that for the plateau. That watch covers an area stretching from here to Lynchburg, Virginia!

For the plateau as a whole, I’m feeling better.

Special update issued August 17 at 3:00pm

A severe t-storm warning has been issued for White and Van Buren counties until 3:45. This storm is mainly between Sparta and Spencer and moving east. IF this storm holds together, it may impact portions of southwest Cumberland County around 4:00 pm.

There hasn’t been any damage reported with this storm and there’s no rotation indicated. Still, these summer storms can pack a punch with little or no warning.

I’m staying parked here for now on the concern meter…no more…no less concerned.
