I’m home! It was a quick but very eventful trip and I can’t wait to share what I learned with you all in the coming days and weeks. I have a ton of cool material for next summer’s space camp, for sure!!! lol I’m glad to be home safe and sound and looking forward to the next launch. Speaking of which…That launch was scheduled for September 12 but there’s a leak that needs fixing and so that launch has been delayed. We should find out soon when the new launch date will be (probably a few days or a couple weeks later than the 12th).

The most active weather today is out west toward the Four Corners region. Elsewhere, it’s just a hot summer day!

For the tropics, we have an area of low pressure that may spin up into a depression today off the Louisiana coastline. We also have the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly that may try to reorganize into a depression this week near the Bahamas. Neither area is a serious concern to the U.S. at this point.

Good evening, folks! We continue to have a 30% chance for a showe or storm this evening. You can see some distant lightning from a storm down near Athens right now. Some of you all may see some lightning from a storm west of Livingston. It’s a worth a look out to see!

Skies should cooperate, for the most part, for the eclipse tonight, especially since it doesn’t peak until later. The eclipse starts at 9:33 pm CDT and peaks at 11:12. The eclipse ends at 12:51 a.m. You’ll notice the Moon turning reddish in color. This occurs when the earth passes between the sun and the moon.

The Moon turns red for the exact same reason we see red and orange sunsets. At sunset, sunlight travels through a thick layer of air to reach your eyes, scattering the blue away. During a lunar eclipse, the light hitting the moon has filtered through all the world’s simultaneous sunrises and sunsets. Volcanic ash, dust storms, or clouds in Earth’s atmosphere can make the red color deeper or darker. Pretty cool stuff, right?

As you gaze at the eclipse, you might think about our return to the Moon. Someday we’ll walk again on that big beautiful moon!

4:30 Update: There are now more showers/thundershowers firing off in the same place that earlier showers fired off today. The circled area has been more active than any other area of the plateau today! ha

2:40 Update: Skies are beautiful out there this afternoon but clouds are struggling to build vertically! Our 50% chance for shrs may be closer to 30% if things don’t change. Three are some shrs showign up northwest of Nasvhille and earlier shrs try to develop in southeast Cumberland County (those dissipated).

10:55 Update: Tropical Storm Dolly has now formed in the Atlantic. She’s not expected to cause any trouble. The naming is purely coincidental, with these names being determined years in advance.
