I am a local meteorologist for the Upper Cumberlands of Tennessee. I absolutely love tracking and forecasting the weather for this region! It is certainly an interesting place for weather!
If you ever want to talk weather you have found an ear! I hope you enjoy reading my blog as much as I enjoy writing for it!
Strong storms have been impacting parts of the plateau over the past hour. So far, nothing has been warned but some of you have been letting me know how noisy some of these storms are. More storms are moving toward the plateau and will be crossing the plateau over the next couple of hours. Frequent lightning is possible, as well as gusty winds and heavy rainfall.
Overall, the severe risk is low. Hopefully, we just get some rain! Additional scattered showers and storms are likely throughout the night. I’ll issue special updates, if needed.
Please stay alert to any watches or warnings that may be issued. And please stay tuned to any special updates that I may need to issue. You all take care!

For the risk for flash flooding and the risk for isolated severe storms.
Through Sunday for all of Middle and East TN
Good evening, folks! We’ve enjoyed a break that, for many of us, has held through the afternoon. Those of you around Sparta have been dealing with storms afternoon, as well as you folks over in Morgan County. More storms are moving into the Sparta area even now.
The greatest risk for storms over the next hour will be across White and southern Cumberland County. There’s also a storm developing near Carthage, as well as a line of storms just behind it, that will be pushing toward Cookeville within the hour. As you can see by the radar below, more scattered showers and storms are coming for later this evening for a great many of us. Some of these storms could be strong or even severe.
Much of the activity on radar is what I was talking about in the last update that would be nearing the plateau sometime around the 6:00 hour. Rather than forming into a complex of storms, it has managed to form a few lines of storms, along with other scattered shrs and storms. In other words, it’s a bit disorganized, which reduces (but doesn’t eliminate) the severe storm threat. I’ll watch all of this closely.
Still, looking at radar, we have plenty of shower and storm chances left for this evening and even into tonight. I’ll do another special update later this evening, or as needed, to keep you updated on the latest. At this time there are no watches or warnings across Middle TN.
Thankfully, the hourly forecast continues to be on track and I haven’t made any changes since the last update.
Please stay alert to any watches or warnings that may be issued. And please stay tuned to any special updates that I may need to issue. You all take care!

I’ve updated the hourly forecast below. I made some adjustments to afernoon rain chances (decreased a bit) and increased evening rain chances.
We have a break now from the morning round of scattered showers and storms. That activity has pushed south and east of our area (pictured below). We may see a nice break for the next several hours. However, if you’re outside keep a check on the sky and the radar in case a storm pops up in the heat of the afternoon. Any storm that does could become severe.
Our next complex of storms is taking shape well to our west at this hour. That will likely push in later this evening. If most of the plateau stays rain free this afternoon, the atmosphere will only become more unstable and help energize these incoming storms. I’ll keep a very close eye on that. Right now, I would estimate these storms to be near the plateau by 6:00 pm, if they don’t speed up or slow down. But again, we’re not only watching these complexes but also for pop up storms in the heat and humidity of the afternoon. Our atmosphere is very unstable, which means any storm this afternoon could easily become severe. A flash flood watch remains in effect through Sunday.
Please stay alert to any watches or warnings that may come today. And please stay tuned to any special updates that I may need to issued. You all take care!

Today’s weather map shows a very active weather day on the plateau. Any storm that develops may become severe, with damaging winds and flash flooding being the main threats. Frequent lightning may also occur. If you’re out and about, keep an eye on the sky and radar and stay abreast of any alerts.
Elsewhere around the country, severe thunderstorms capable of damaging winds will be possible from the Ozark Plateau east into the Tennessee Valley Saturday. Rounds of heavy thunderstorms ahead of a slow moving front will continue locally heavy rainfall and scattered flash flooding potential from the Ozarks to the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. Extreme heat will continue for the Intermountain West and Plains.
Sunday’s weather map shows a continued risk for flash flooding on the plateau and East TN.
