Well, if you have weekend outdoor plans, I would seriously reconsider them. If you insist on carrying through with your plans, just know that there could be periods of rain and storms and you will need to be near sturdy shelter in case a severe storm blows up where you are. You will also need to be aware of the dangers of flash flooding.

We’ll be most mindful of these big complexes of thunderstorms that will develop to our west and move in our direction. Forecasting the exact time of development is difficult, as well as the exact impacts. However, all the ingredients are in place for these to develop and we just have to stay tuned to forecast updates. These complexes look like the image below on infrared satellite. Once one develops, we can then track toward us.

Like today, even if a complex of storms isn’t moving through, we could see a storm pop up at any time in this unstable, warm and humid airmass.

These systems are powered by strong winds aloft and by the cool pool of air that develops in their wake, in the rain cooled are they leave behind. That cooler air helps push the complex along, as well has helps new storms develop as the complex moves along. The colder that cooler air behind it, the faster the complex moves.

And any storm with the complex can become severe, with damaging winds always being the main severe weather threat with those storms.

Stay tuned for updates to this! I worked hard on this but just a small change in the development and movement of a thunderstorm complex can throw a wrench in this. Still, I feel pretty confident in this forecast. I’ll issue updates, as needed on the app and site and I’ll have another full forecast update in the morning!

I’ve circled three storm complexes to track today and tonight. The first is coming through this morning, the second is righ on its heels in West TN and the third is in Missouri. We’ll track these on our radars today and tonight, in addition to anything that pops up in between.

Warm, humid air from the Gulf will combine with a very unstable summer atmosphere to bring the threat for very heavy rainfall to the plateau over the next several days. Along with that rainfall, some of the storms in this environment could become severe. In addition, frequent lightning will also be a threat.

A slow moving front will bring rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall to the central Plains eastward to the east-central U.S.. The first widespread significant heat wave of summer for the Intermountain West and Plains is expected to develop today and expand through next week. Dangerous heat will continue to impact portions of the Southwest and Southeast.

A complex of storms is moving through western Kentucky and western Tennessee this evening. This is the complex that I’ve mentioned that we would need to watch. It has several severe t-storm warnings with it now and has had a history of producing some wind damage. However, a general weakening trend has been seen and that is very likely to continue as the sun has set and the atmosphere stabilizes.

That complex of storms can be seen on the radar image below. Hopefully we at least get some rain from this overnight. Just don’t be suprised if you hear some thunder later tonight. If this holds together, it should get here after midnight. I’ll keep an eye on things.

Very unsettled weather continues for the plateau, with a frontal boundary meandering through the area, combined with heat, humidity, and the topography of the plateau. That will give us shower and storm chances today. A complex of storms to our west may bring storms for us late tonight. I’ll keep an eye on that. More complexes of storms may impact our area Friday and Friday night, bringing the potential for heavy rainfall and strong storms.

Elsewhere, severe thunderstorms and showers pose a risk for excessive rain, localized flash flooding, strong gusts and/or large hail across portions of the northern and central Plains, the Lower Missouri to Lower Ohio Valleys, and across the Mid-Atlantic this afternoon and evening. Extreme heat is ongoing over the Desert Southwest and the Southeast U.S
