Scattered showers and storms are developing this afternoon to our northwest and are moving toward the plateau. These will contain dangerous lightning and heavy downpours that could lead to localized flash flooding. Be mindful of this if you have outdoor plans this afternoon. Have indoor back-up plans in place, especially if need to take shelter from a storm. These are scattered, so not everyone will see them. Just be ready in case you do. I’ll issue special updates, if needed. You all take care!

We continue to be entrenched in heat and humidity, which creates ideal conditions for scattered showers and storms, especially in the heat of the afternoon.
Wildfire smoke continues to impact air quality from the Great Lakes region into New England and the Mid-Atlantic today with widespread Air Quality Alerts in effect. Severe thunderstorms are expected across portions of the Ohio Valley and Lower Great Lakes into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, this afternoon into the evening. Monsoonal thunderstorms may bring areas of flooding to the Southwest.
The Crossville Airport is the official reporting station for the plateau.

Overall, much of the state improved with this update! Last week, 82% of our state was in drought. This week, only 55% of our state is in drought. That’s aa incredible improvement! Here on the plateau, results are mixed. Portions of our northern areas have been removed from drought, while other, including nearly all of Cumberland County, remain in severe drought.

This is an abbreviated look at the Friday night update. It’s been a busy evening keeping an eye on storms and getting flash flood warnings out. Please be safe this evening in areas that have recieved flash flooding this evening.
Bringing you your tailor-made local weather forecast since 2017!
The areas with flash flood warnings are shaded in green. The Cumberland County one is active until 8:45. The one farther west is active until 9:45.
And we just got some new flash flood warnings for the Celina area down toward Gainsboro until 10:30.
Saturday’s weather map shows more unsettled weather once again. The greatest risk for severe storms will be found across the Northeast, where a huge area of threat is outlined.
Our threats remain the same this weekend. A damaging wind gust can’t be ruled out, but flash flooding is the greater threat.
Rain chances have been reduced from 70% to 50% with the latest round of data. I’ll have a full update on this in the morning. Widespread showers and storms once again appear likely on Sunday. By next week, we return to your typical isolated summer afternoon storms.
In the tropics, an area of low pressure may form in the northeast Gulf. That system has a 30% chance of becoming a tropical storm before it moves across northern Florida and then into the Atlantic. This system will not become a hurricane, but it could kick up waves and produce bands of showers and gusty winds for portions of the Southeast through Monday.
Again, I’ll have a full update in the morning! You all take care!

At 6:45 pm, new flash flood warnings are now in effect for the areas you see shaded in green just to the west of the plateau. The new warnings include Van Buren, White (Sparta), Putnam (Cookeville), and Clay Counties until 9:45. The warning over much of Cumberland County is in effect until 8:45.
Storms on top of the plateau have lost much of their strength, leaving us with areas of light to moderate rainfall. You folks to the west of the plateau will see your storms weaken over the next hour. For now, be aware of rapidly rising water and remember to never cross a flooded road, especially if the water is rapidly moving.
