MM’s Wx Analysis

We’re sandwiched between high pressure and a very active stationary front. That will give us clouds and a chance for rain.

Flash flooding threatens areas from Missouri to the Carolinas as storms repeat along a stalled front. Monsoonal storms may trigger flooding in the Southwest. Severe storms threaten North Dakota and northern Minnesota (hopefully refief for some of those wildfires). Dangerous heat expands across the Desert Southwest, Plains, mid-Mississippi Valley and Southern Tier. Critical fire weather for interior Pacific Northwest. Cooler, drier air brings brief relief to the Great Lakes and Northeast.

Drought conditions continue to slowly improve! Also, keep in mind that Tuesday and Wednesday’s rain is not included in this analysis but it will be included in next week’s update. Last week, 55% of the state was in drougth. This week that percentage is down to 45%, which is a remarkable recovery! Three months ago, 100% of the state was in drought, with 86% of the state in severe to extreme drought. Today, only 4% of the state is in severe drought. A remarkable recovery, indeed.

MM’s Wx Analysis

The heavier showers have pushed just to our south, putting us on the cooler and less humid side of the cold front. Still, a shower may sneak into areas south of I-40 today but that risk is very low.

Dangerous heat will expand from the Gulf Coast into the Southern Plains and Desert Southwest through week’s end. Additional extreme heat impacting the Pacific Northwest will shift to the northern Plains by the weekend. Tropical Storm Bertha is expected to continue to impact portions of the northwestern Gulf Coast from south central Louisiana to the upper Texas coast today.

This is Wednesday evening, July 22, 2026

We had a close call with severe storms and flash flooding last night and we should be thankful that it missed most of us here on the plateau. I ended up with close to 1.5″ of rain for today here in Rinnie. I know many of you had good totals today. We’ll see another chance for showers tonight before a beautiful Thursday arrives.

5-Day Forecast

MM says…We have a nice Thursday, before rain chances return in earnest Friday night and Saturday.

My confidence is really good in the 5-Day forecast, but I don have some uncertainties, as seen below. The placement of the front will determine who gets the most rain Friday night and Saturday. Details will be worked out over the next 24 hours.

MM’s Weather Worries

Even though we have higher rain and storm chances coming Friday night and Saturday, there doesn’t appear to be much, if any, severe threat (aside from a possible flooding threat).

MM’s Wx Analysis

Tropical Storm Bertha made landfall on the Lousiana coastline this afternoon with winds of 45 mph. That system will continue tracking westward as a weak tropical storm.

An active jetstream pattern continues this weekend, helping bring increased rain chances once again.

Additional Analysis

Yesterday’s storms were rough in Kentucky and to our west around Nashville. We were fortunate to miss out on the tornado warnings and flash flooding.

These are storm reports so far this month. More will be added as more reports are filed from yesterday’s storms.

We’re racking up storm reports nationally too! Each blue dot is a wind damage report.

I’m testing a new radar product for WeatherTAP using 3D radar. How cool is that?! I was playing around with one of the storms in West TN last night. Look how much better you can analyze the storm with 3D!

The imagery is so impressive! I’ll be able to share this stuff with you all during times of severe weather around here. If there’s a tornado, you can often see the tube extending down on 3D radar. Cool stuff!

I was even able to see some weak rotation with the storm, something I’ll be able to show you all with storms here on the plateau when severe weather occurs again.

Our summer cold front continues to sluggishly move through the area. Drier air will filter in from the north later this afternoon.

Scattered thunderstorms with severe gusts, hail and a tornado risk are possible near a cold front from the Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic tonight. Tropical Storm Bertha is expected to bring tropical storm conditions to portions of the Gulf Coast from the panhandle of Florida into Louisiana through Wednesday.
