A severe t-storm watch has been issued until 1:00 a.m. The risk for us begins increasing after 9:00 pm and we’ll mainly be tracking a line of strong to severe storms as it crosses Middle TN. This line is expected to weaken through the evening but it could still be packing a punch when it arrives here later in the evening.

I’ll keep an eye on this and will issue updates later in the evening and as needed.

All the counties shaded in purple are in the severe t-storm watch. This includes the entire Upper Cumberland Region.

Keep in mind these times can change a bit if the line speeds up and/or slows down. Just keep an eye on those radars as the line approaches.

I just wanted to give you all a quick update on our severe storm potential for tonight. Once again, our threat is low but not zero. A conference call with the NWS this afternoon has helped clear some things up, including the timeline. It now looks like the severe threat will be over by midnight, if not sooner! That is wonderful news, right? I think one long night is enough and back to back long nights is just awful.

The other good news is that, like last night, the atmosphere begins to stablize after sunset. Once we start losing heating, the atmosphere stars settling down. Still, we’ll monitor storms to our west this evening and see how they evolve as they move eastward. Last night’s threat was always low and that forecast played out well. The worst thing about last night’s storms was the frequent lightning and very loud thunder. I’m not sure this evening’s storms will be as noisy.

I should add that some of the short term models show the strongest storms splitting and going north and south of the plateau. We can never rule out such a scenario. Hopefully we get some more rain, as we are still in drought even after last night’s rain. Also, while a great many of us picked up a lot of rain last night, some folks didnt’ even get an inch.

MM’s Forecast for the Plateau

This forecast is tailor-made for the Cumberland Plateau by Meteorologist Mark Baldwin each day!

Beneficial rainfall fell last night and we’ll hope for more tonight! We’ll also hope for another night without severe storms, though there is a risk for that again.

Today is fine. We’ll see mostly cloudy skies and we’ll hope we don’t see sun. Sun will warm us up more and create more unstable conditions. We don’t want that ahead of tonight’s storm threat.

Wednesday looks showery and we’ll take very drop. Thursday looks good.

A southern system will bring the threat of showers Friday and Saturday, followed by much colder air Saturday night that will lead to frost. If that rain system goes too far south, our rain chances will decrease. That looks like a possibility, so stay tuned to refinements to that part of the forecast.

We have almost the same threats as last night, with another low-end event….but certainly not zero.

The SPC has our region in the slight risk for severe storms for tonight. This is one level higher than the threat we had last night (we were in marginal last night). Damaging winds are the main threat.

Storm continue to struggle to maintain intensity. They’re definitely not struggling to produce lightning and thunder, but that doesn’t make a storm severe. At this hour, the closest severe storm is over Nashville.

If you notice temps, Nasvhille is 70°, while Crossville and Livingston are reporting 64°. Our air is also drier and not as humid as it is over there. That’s good for us. Our atmosphere in general is more stable than it is over there. I suspect that’s why the SPC has hesitated to even issue a severe t-storm watch for us. That’s not to say they won’t change their minds, but it’s a good sign when they hesitate. It’s also good that they have decided to leave us in the marginal risk for severe storms, which is the lowest of the five risk categories.

It’s honestly looking more and more like a messy storm mode for us overnight, rather than one big potent squall line coming through. So, rumbling thunder will remain likely, along with gusty winds. The strongest cells could produce small hail. This messy storm mode also bodes well for us to get some good downpours across the area. Those fast moving squall lines that we’ve seen so many times in the past normally don’t drop much rain, while the messy storm mode we’re seeing tonight often does produce more coverage of rainfall.

I can’t rule out an isolated severe storm the rest of the night but the severe risk overall continues to look low.
