The storm that prompted the tornado warning for those of us in northern Cumberland County is showing much weaker rotation. In fact, the tornado warning was just dropped. As it crossed the Cumberland-Putnam border just east of Monterey is when it looked the most impressive. This storm continues to stay north of Crossville.
Those of you in Fairfield Glade are in line for this severe storm and it continues to pack a punch.
More storms are developing to our west and we’ll watch those closely over the coming hours. I’ll be watching it!

MM’s ForecastUpdate for the Plateau
For the most part, storms have struggled in TN today. The main action has been just to our north in Kentucky. However, as that frontal boundary slowly sags south tonight, showers and storms should become more widespread. The main risk is flash flooding, but a severe storm can’t be ruled out. One need only step outside to know that we have plenty of heat and humidity for heavy rain and storms. The problem this afternoon has been weak instability in the atmosphere above us. That should change as we go through the night and the front gets closer.
Radar shos storms just to our west. In fact, Cookeville is seeing some heavy rainfall in their vicinity right now. That activity is moving east. More storms are trying to fire back around Nashville. We should see more and more of this type of activity in the comng hours.
I’ll keep an eye on things.

MM’s ForecastUpdate for the Plateau
The Storm Prediction Center has done two noteworthy things this afternoon. First, they upgraded our entire region to a slight risk for severe storms. We had been in the marginal risk. Marginal is level 1, while slight is level 2 out of 5 (with 5 being the highest level of threat). That just means we don’t need to let our guard down this afternoon and evening.
Second, they issued a severe t-storm watch for the Nashville are until 8:00 pm. This reaches as far east as Carthage but does not include Putnam County. We are near that watch, so we need to be weather-aware as well. Be especially mindful of this if you have travel plans to the west this evening. The counties in that watch can be seen highlighted on the map below.
We are seeing more and more showers and storms developing this afternoon. As I said this morning, any of these storms could become severe. Damaging straight-line winds are the main threat but a spin-up tornado can’t be ruled out.
My level of concern is unchanged from this morning. We still consider this a Meteorologist Mark Weather Alert Day on the plateau. Outdoor plans are strongly discouraged for the rest of today and this evening.
My thoughts on the threats remains unchanged, with the SPC’s upgrade to slight risk only reinforcing my thoughts from this morning. Threats are low, but certainlynot zero.
As always, I’ll keep a very close eye on things and issue updates throughout the rest of today and tonight, as needed.
