Special update issued Tuesday, August 11, 2026

In one of my previous posts, I mentioned that storms could develop west of the main complex of storms moving southeast from KY. That has certainly happened. Thankfully, these storms are below severe limits and may stay sub-severe. Regardless, they have frequent lightning, gusty winds, and very heavy downpours of rain. These storms will continue to moving southward over the next few hours. You can easily see the lightning flashes in tonight’s sky!
So, while the main complex of storms, the ones carrying the greatest severe threat, have pushed into East TN, these new storms developing to the west of those are what will likely impact the plateau between now and midnight. Those of you in northern Fentress County are already dealing with these. Additional storms have fired off south of Interstate 40 . Radar has gotten very busy over the past hour!
The only change I’ve made to this morning’s hourly graphic is to increase storm chances from 50% to 70% around midnight.

It continues to look as though straight-line winds will be the main threat with any severe storm. However, we can never dismiss the flash flood risk when it’s this humid outside.
