Strong storms for Sunday, and two tropical systems to watch!

The hot and humid weather will continue today and right on through the weekend. Expect only isolated afternoon and evening storms today. Most of us will stay dry. High temps will top out in the lower 80s. Tonight, we’ll drop to the mid 60s with muggy conditions. Those muggies hang around for Saturday, and with  highs approaching 85, it will feel quite oppressive. The chances for t-storms is a bit higher on Saturday, but most of us should stay dry again. On Sunday, a front inches closer and our rain chances go up to about 70% by Sunday evening. Showers and t-storms continue for Monday, with highs near 80. We do have to be watchful of the storms on Sunday, as some of those could pack a punch. By Tuesday, the front will have made it through and we’ll enjoy lower humidity and highs in the upper 70s. Enjoy it, because the heat and humidity will try to return quickly (it is the end of June, you know? ).

We’re still watching the tropics! It now looks like we will have two tropical storms developing over the weekend and into next week. One will be in the southern Gulf of Mexico and the other will be out in the Atlantic. The one in the Gulf may threaten the Gulf Coast states by early next week. If you have plans to travel to the coast, pay attention to the forecast.

You all have a great weekend! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

Afternoon update on the storms

The main line of storms is passing over the Plateau at this very hour. It should be completely off the Plateau by 2:30. I’d give it at least another hour to completely stop raining, though. Here’s a glance at the radar at 1:35pm. Storms are moving southeast. Notice that light rain remains all the way back to the other side of Nashville.

The Storm Prediction Center is considering issuing a severe t-storm watch for this line, but that should have no effect on us here on the plateau, since the line has nearly cleared us now. You may see a watch, however, issued for areas east and south of us.

Strong storms today for us! Also, keeping an eye on the tropics!

For today, look for scattered t-storms. Some of these storms will have the potential to become severe, with damaging winds and hail the main threat. The tornado threat is extremely low. You can already see one line of storms building to our north if you look toward Kentucky. They’re a beautiful site to see! Also, one glance at the radar and you know we’ve got a stormy day ahead. Highs should easily reach the low 80s before storms arrive. The first line of storms should be here by 11:00am. But then we have more storms out west that will be moving in this afternoon.

On Friday, we’ll see much more islolated storms. In other words, we’ll be back to the heat-of-the-day pop up variety of storms that we’re used to getting in the summer months. Saturday will be much of the same. Highs each day will be in the low to mid 80s. On Sunday and Monday we’ll see rain chances increase again as another front approaches. This front should bring us some lower humidity for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

We’re also watching the tropics! It looks more and more likely that we’ll see tropical development in the southern Gulf of Mexico over the weekend. Where it goes from there is still a guess. I’ll keep you posted!

Strong to severe storms for Thursday and possible trouble in the tropics!

The heat is already cranking up out there today, with the temp already approaching 80 degrees and it’s not even 8:30 yet! Expect a very hot and humid day, with isolated to scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms. We don’t expect any organized severe wx, though any storm this time of year is capable of briefly becoming severe. Regardless, these summer storms usually contain lots of dangerous lightning and gusty winds. A more substantial severe wx threat will exist on Thursday. We’re not expecting much in the way of tornadoes, due to conditions just not being favorable for that kind of activity, but we could see some very potent storms roll out of Kentucky during the afternoon or evening. I’ll keep an eye on it. Right now, damaging straight line winds look to be the main threat, along with very heavy rainfall and some hail.  On Friday, we go back to your typical heat-of-the-day afternoon and evening t-storms.  That forecast will hold throughout the weekend. There are indications that a front will make its way through here early next week, bringing lower humidity. We’ll keep our fingers crossed!

Tropical Troubles?

As we all know, hurricane season started June 1. Typically, we expect development to be slow for June and anything that develops is usually in the Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico. FYI, hurricane season peaks in late August to early September. We are monitoring a disturbance that will make its way into the southern Gulf over the next several days. And that’s exactly where we’d expect any development to occur this time of year. The chance of development is small, but with the threat of a Gulf storm, we have to monitor it. Where it goes from there is anyone’s guess at this point. We have several days  to monitor that.  What is unusual is that a very strong disturbance has come off the coast of Africa and will be making its way across the Atlantic. It’s something to monitor because all indications are that the steering pattern will guide it right toward the Caribbean, where it becomes a concern to the US. Again, anything can happen between now and then, but we’ll monitor it. That wouldn’t be a threat until next week. Let us know if you have any questions by asking here or AskUs@weathertap.com!
