Issued the evening of January 8, 2026

Good evening! The powerful storm system that will bring us rounds of rain and storms is taking shape to our west tonight. We’ll feel the first “punch” from it Friday morning. The weather map currently shows the first piece coming together, which is the warm front that will be lifting north tonight. It is currently stretched from Nashville to Chattanooga and moving north. Ahead of the warm front, the air is rather dry. Behind the warm front, the air is very moist. This will set the stage for showers and storms through Saturday morning.

The modeled map below shows the surge of warm, moist air moving northward by Friday morning (the yellow colors). Notice how far north that airmass surges! The Gulf is unusually warm for this time of year, and that can add even more moisture to our air.

A vigourous jet stream aloft will also allow rain and storms to exist. That active and windy jet will be in our vicinity through Saturday. For a more indepth look at the meteorology behind our storm system, please see my YouTube update that I put out this evening (found at the start of this update).

Level 2 means that Friday and Saturday will be Meteorologist Mark Weather Alert Days (along with Friday night).

Nothing much has changed with this since my last update.

I made a few changes to this graphic to reflect the lower rain chances Friday afternoon. Right now, it looks like Friday morning will be very wet, followed by a bit of a break in the afternoon, followed by another surge of moisture later Friday night into Saturday morning.

All the changing weather will lead to increased aches and pains! Relief should come next week.

As always, I’ll be monitoring all of this very closely. You all stay safe and stay tuned!
