Stay tuned for additional updates, as needed! I’ll be tracking this through the evening and overnight.
Friday Afternoon Weather Update
This update is to mainly update the hourly weather forecast seen in the image below. I also increased precip chances. Normally, this graphic is in three-hour increments. However, I added hourly increments from 8:00 – Midnight to show the anticipated transition. Those of you in the north and northwest (ie. Overton, Pickett and Fentress) will see the transition first. Then, that transition will make its way southward. The sooner the surface temp in your location drops to freezing, the sooner you’ll see accumulation. Because so much of the precip is expected to fall before temps drop to 32 degrees, much of this will not be able to accumulate, as it looks right now. If the cold air speeds up, accumulations tick up.

Like I explained last night, with dry air here at the surface we are likely to see the rain start as a rain/sleet mix. This is due to evaporational cooling. As rain falls into the drier air here at the surface, it evaporates, which cools the air. This evaporative cooling causes some of the raindrops to freeze into sleet pellets. This is unlikely to cause issues, as our temps here near the surface will be above freezing. In time, the surface air moistens up and all precip falls as rain until colder air from the north moves back in.

My forecast reasoning remains the same on the snow amounts. This is dependent upon when the surface temp drops below freezing. That is when the snow will be able to accumulate. Due to the ground being so cold, accumulation should begin as soon as temps drop to freezing. If all the precip tonight could fall as accumulating snowfall, we would have gotten about three inches worth.

I’ll keep a very close eye on things and keep you all udpated! Make sure you follow this site or download the free Meteorologist Mark app from your Android or Apple stores, so that you get the updates as they’re issued. Thank you!
