MM’s March Wx Madness 5-Day: Winds, Severe Storms, & Snow

Issued Saturday morning, March 14, 2026

I will issue special updates, as needed, to keep you informed of the wind threat for Sunday, the severe storm threat Sunday night, and the snow threat for Monday. Whew….March Madness has arrived!

Please prepare for power outages from this weather event. Depending on the severity of Sunday night’s squall line, some outages could be of the “long duration” variety. Let’s be prepared, just in case, especially since this cold front is bringing MUCH colder air to the region.

MM’s Forecast for the Plateau

Local matters, especially when it comes to your weather forecast! Bringing you your local weather since 2017!

This forecast is tailor-made for the Cumberland Plateau by Meteorologist Mark Baldwin each day!

A beatiful “calm before the storminess” kinda day!

Get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather today!

A warm front will cross the region this afternoon, shifting winds to the south. Those winds begin picking up tonight, becoming downright gusty by Sunday afternoon. By Sunday evening, winds may be gusting to 40-45 mph. That kind of wind always leads to sporadic power outages across the plateau.

Make sure any loose outdoor objects are secured before Sunday’s winds arrive.

Then, a line of storms approaches the plateau around midnight. That line will contain even gustier winds. In heavier downpours and/or stronger storms, straight-line winds could gust to 75 mph. There is the potential for widespread damaging winds with the passage of this line. In addition, spin-up tornadoes within the line are possible, leading to even greater swaths of wind damage.

There are a couple of things that may help us out with the severe storms. First, there will be a “cap” located a few thousand feet above us. A “cap” is basically a layer of warm air aloft. If that cap holds, it would suppress storm activity. Another thing that may help us out is the timing of the front. Since it’s coming at a cooler time of the day, showers and storms may struggle to produce heavy enough precip to push gusty winds to the surface. The strongest winds will be just above the surface, at about 3-5,000 ft above us. Heavier rain can push those strongest down to the surface. If those showers stay lighter, they will have less potential to push those winds down to the surface.

By Monday, arctic air rushes in and rain changes to snow flurries and snow showers. While significant impacts are not expected, some minor impacts could result from heavier snow showers. The better moisture may stay to our north, but I still think the atmosphere will be such that we can get snow showers and snow flurries. I’ll monitor that closely.

Bitter cold air arrives Monday night, with lows in the mid teens. We recover a bit on Tuesday, before a big warming trend arrives Wednesday.
