Sunday Afternoon Update

Issued Sunday, March 15, at 1:55 p.m.

I’ll have a special update at 5:00 to discuss all the latest with tonight’s storms and the gusty winds ahead of the line. Those gusty winds are already picking up out there and they will only intensify though the evening. It now looks like some of us could have 50 mph gusts before the front gets here.

A NWS conference call on tonight’s storm was held at 1:00 and it was very helpful to get their take on all of this.

The front is still expected around midnight to 1:00 a.m. The only change so far is to elevate our maximum wind gust from 75 to 80 mph within the line of storms. Any tornado spin-up would only enhance those winds, of course.

The Storm Prediction Center has extended the enhanced risk to East TN, so it now includes all of the plateau. Let’s not get “caught up in the colors” and just recognize the threats that we have the rest of today (with gusty winds) and tonight (with the line of storms).

Prepare for power outages. Make sure your weather radio, etc. has good batteries (and those flashlights!).

The cap, or that warm layer aloft that I’ve talked about, is strong this afternoon. That’s preventing any storms from developing through this evening. Let’s hope that cap can hinder the storms along the front tonight, as well. We’ll know more about that when we see how storms progress across West TN late this evening.

Some of you have asked if Nashville will be doing a special weather balloon launch this afternoon. They do not plan to because the regularly scheduled launch is at 6:00 and that is well enough ahead of the storms to work just fine.

You all take care and I’ll have a special update at 5:00.

Please remember that you can download the free Meteorologist Mark app for android and iphone and get updates sent straight to your phone as I issue them, which really comes in handy during bad weather.

Thank you!
