Another nice day and a look at some new tornado research

Forecast_Template1

Main threats

No significant threats in sight.

Summary

There’s more on the latest tornado research in the News section at the bottom of this blog.

It looks like we’re going to squeeze out another nice day! Look for lots of sunshine, with clouds drifting by from time to time. Those clouds will eventually thicken up and bring us some showers tomorrow. Some of you may even see a shower tonight, especially north of I-40.

Thursday looks unsettled, with shower and t-storm chances throughout the day. Nothing looks too heavy or severe at this point, and that’s always a good thing! Those showers will linger into Thursday night and Friday morning, before conditions improve after lunchtime Friday.

Saturday is looking good and Sunday isn’t looking half bad. We will have to watch for a shower or storm during the afternoon or evening but, overall, it’s not looking like a bad weekend at all.

Another rain chance may sneak in here Monday night (nothing too heavy) and again on Tuesday. Just some more spring showers and t-showers. I still can’t see any clear signals of widespread severe weather affecting us anytime soon. Let’s hope it stays that way!

Meteorology means “in the sky” and “study”, coming from the Greek words “meteoros” and “logia”.

Records

It was on this day in 1975 that an F-2 tornado touched down in Mayland, in the western end of Cumberland County. The tornado was on the ground for two miles. Though it’s path was short, it claimed the life of one person and injured four others.

According to storm reports, the tornado touched down twice. Two mobile homes and a brick home were destroyed. The fatality and injuries occurred in mobile homes. Numerous trees were twisted and broken.

The NWS seriously considered giving this tornado a higher F-scale rating, due to the destruction of the brick home. Some still say this tornado should have been given an F-3 rating because of this (I tend to agree with that).

What to look for in the night sky tonight

If skies cooperate, Orion the hunter can be clearly seen low in the west as darkness falls. The constellation sets at around 9:30. The sky chart below has an arrow pointed to Orion. This sky chart is the sky at around 7:00 p.m. tonight. Again, hopefully the skies cooperate and it won’t be too cloudy.

News

This research is the result of a new study and is a tornado vulnerability index by county. It includes a mean tornado intensity (with frequency factored in), mobile home %, population density (people/km^2) and income statistics to calculate vulnerability. As expected, the Southeast is more vulnerable than any other region of the country. We get a lot of bad storms (plenty of warm, humid air) and we have a lot of folks in mobile homes.

I zoomed in a bit so you can see our area better. I circled the Cumberland Plateau. Cumberland County is right in the middle. As you can see, the Cumberland Plateau is quite vulnerable. In fact, it’s one of the more vulnerable areas in Tennessee. That’s why it is so important to always pay attention to the forecast, especially this time of year.

You all keep me in mind this morning at 10:00 a.m. That is when I will be meeting my mentee from Kids on the Rise. He’s a first grader from Stone Elementary. I’m nervous and excited, but I’m sure this will be an incredible opportunity. Wish me luck!

You all have a great day!

Another warm day

Forecast_Template1

Main threats

No significant threats in sight.

Summary

We’ll see another warm day today! I can’t rule out an isolated shower but it is certainly nothing to cancel any outdoor plans over. Most of us will stay warm and dry. I think the clouds and slight increase in humidity will keep us in the mid to upper 70s. I’m not sure we’ll hit 80 here at weatherTAP again today.

We’ll keep a chance for a shower or storm around for tomorrow and Thursday, before a better chance of rain arrives Thursday night. Most of us should get some rain from this system. The storms look to stay below severe limits.

Friday and Saturday are looking quite pleasant. We may still be dealing with a morning shower on Friday, but I didn’t even bother putting that chance on the outlook above.

Another chance for a shower or storm arrives Sunday, but most of us will likely stay dry.

WeatherTAP WeatherFACT

A hurricane can never cross the Equator. Some of come close but none have ever crossed that line. Hurricanes depend on the Coriolis Effect (spin of the earth) to get their rotation. That force is zero at the Equator, increasing the farther north or south you go, until maximizing at the Poles.

Records

On this day in 1885 the city of Denver found itself in the midst of a winter storm that would drop 23 inches of snow in just 24 hours. I bet they were wondering where their spring season had gone to!

In 1983, a very localized blizzard (some called it a “mini” blizzard) struck Laramie, Wyoming. A foot of snow fell in just eight hours during the night. I wonder how many people woke up to a surprise snow the next day? (ha)

Highs were once again in the 50s, topping out at 56 degrees. That was two degrees cooler than the day before. The morning low was only 52 degrees, so guess what? Yeah, it was a very rainy day. By day’s end, 1.91 inches of rain had fallen.

What to look for in the night sky tonight

Keep looking for those Lyrid meteors. The moon doesn’t rise until later in the night, so viewing is actually pretty good. Just watch those clouds. They’re getting to be quite pesky again these day.

News

Training for the St. Jude race this weekend is now beginning to wind down a bit. I finished my last long run for the week this morning. After some rowing tomorrow and spin class tomorrow night, the focus turns to rest and carb loading (my favorite part!). Bring on the pasta!

First 80-degree day at weatherTAP!

The temp has hit 80 degrees here at weatherTAP as of 2:19 p.m. That makes this our first 80-degree temperature reading this spring here at the office in downtown.

This is quite the warm-up from our 41-degree low this morning at 6:03. You can blame the dry air for that big warm up. Our humidity is a bone dry, desert-like 23%. Dry air heats up and cools off quickly. That’s why deserts are so hot in the afternoon but can frost at night.

The nice weather will continue for tomorrow. Today, models have continued to trend drier for Wednesday and we’ll be lucky to see any precip at all during the daylight hours (~20% chance).

Thursday still looks like a pretty good chance for showers and a rumble of thunder. In fact, that is our best chance of rain for the week, as it looks right now.

We are now at 80.4 degrees but we should be at or near our maximum temp for the day.

You all have a nice afternoon and evening!
