Tropics
Arthur continues to sustain winds of 45 mph. Tropical storm warnings are now in effect for the eastern coastline counties of North Carolina, including the Outer Banks, for today.
Normally, tropical systems move on out to sea. This storm, however, looks like it really wants to go to Bermuda before doing that.

Records
On this day in 1995 a massive, half-mile wide F-3 tornado carved a 10-mile wide swath of destruction across southern Cumberland County. The twister injured 20 people. This was the night of Class Night for the high school seniors. Eleven homes, 14 mobile homes, and two businesses were destroyed. Tens of thousands of trees were blown down.
Interestingly, there was no official storm survey conducted for this tornado by the National Weather Service.

NASA News
Nancy Grace Roman (1925-2018), NASA’s first chief astronomer, is known as the ‘Mother of Hubble.’ In a time when women were discouraged from studying math and science, Roman became a research astronomer and was instrumental in taking NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope from an idea to reality and establishing NASA’s program of space-based astronomical observatories.
In this image from the early 1970s, Dr. Roman is shown at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Answer to Trivia Question
A: (c) Much of the atmosphere is within only 10 miles of the surface of the earth. After that point, the atmosphere becomes very, very thin.
The atmosphere is thickest at the Equator and thinner at the Poles. This is because the heat of the Equatorial region causes the atmosphere to swell upward, while the colder air of the poles causes the atmosphere to shrink and be more compressed there. At times, much of the atmosphere is within only five miles of the earth’s surface at the Poles.
You all have a great day!
