MM News

The next MM kids class will be Thursday, February 17th at 4:30 at TCAT. Class is FREE. This hour-long class focuses on staying safe in high winds. With severe weather season upon us, it’s a good time to think about how to stay safe when bad storms threaten. We’ll review our severe weather safety tips and then the kids will construct a home they feel can stand up to Mother Nature’s worst. We’ll then put those homes to the test and discuss why certain ideas worked and why other ideas may fail. Come ready to learn and ready to build! All materials are supplied by MM.

Registration can be found at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdA2XF2d9eVl6g-Ufil7vYMsXi14GQi1GuE7tKY2Iwjijv_Kg/viewform

If you would like to be added to the email list for class notifications just send me an email to meteorologistmark@gmail.com. Registration is available at

An adults class will also be offered this month at TCAT to discuss the severe weather we’ve had this winter. The class is free but any donation goes toward my monthly class for kids at TCAT. Right now I’m raising money to buy tablets for the classes. These tablets will allow students to hold animated weather and space events right in their hands!

Total cost of tablets: $1,800.00 (for 12 ten-inch screen Fire tablets)

Facebook fundraiser campaign: $195.00

Private donations: $150.00

Subscriptions to MM newsletter: $400.00 (a % of those subs goes to class materials & the rest goes to this tablet fund)

Total needed: $1,055.00 (Note: I am applying for a VEC Customer Shares Grant)

Weekly newsletter subscription proceeds go toward supporting my education outreach, primarily including the monthly class for kids that I teach at TCAT. Try a free sample at https://meteorologistmarkpro.com/ and go to the “Free Sample” link. Subs are only $5 per month or discounted at $50 a year. Each week’s newsletter primarily focuses on the weather of the plateau. Find out why subscribers are raving on their new weather newsletters!

Keep in mind there is a monthly newsletter for kids for FREE at https://meteorologistmarkpro.com/newsletter-for-kids/! Starting this month, there will be two newsletters for the kids each month, with one being primarily focused on space and the other on weather. Financial support for my time spent on these letters comes from the subscriptions to the weekly newsletter for adults.

Drought Data

The data cutoff for Drought Monitor maps is each Tuesday at 7 a.m. The maps, which are based on analysis of the data, are released each Thursday at 7:30 a.m. This week’s latest map is seen below.

On Tuesday, the plateau had a deficit in rainfall for the first time this year. That has already changed and after today we won’t worry about rainfall deficits again for a very long time.

Save the Hardwoods

If you’re interested in saving the hardwoods from the deforestation taking place on Catoosa by TWRA please consider signing the petition found below. You may also want to check out http://SaveTheHardwoods.com/ to learn more about the fight taking place in White County to save their hardwoods from being destroyed by TWRA. I have more info available at https://meteorologistmark.com/save-the-hardwoods/. Thank you!

Legislation is being considered that would prevent TWRA from directly profiting from logging.

I have collected 75 signatures (and counting!) thus far. This petition is available to sign through February 15.
