72-Hour Wx Summary

Lots of sunshine awaits us for both today and tomorrow. Breezy conditions will also be present, as high pressure to our north fights the low pressure of “Ian” to our southeast. Those breezes will make it feel cooler. By Friday night, clouds thicken up and we may even see a few showers. Those showers looks to stay with us through Saturday, though forecast rainfall amounts have trended downward and continue to do so.

On This Day 

1927 – An outbreak of tornadoes from Oklahoma to Indiana caused 81 deaths and 25 million dollars damage. A tornado (possibly two tornadoes) cut an eight-mile long path across Saint Louis Missouri, to Granite City Illinois, killing 79 persons. The damage path at times was a mile and a quarter in width. The storm followed a similar path to tornadoes which struck in 1871, 1896, and 1959.

1964- Smithville records its greatest one-day rainfall ever, with 6.35″, as well as Cookeville, with 6.06″.

1916 – American oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller becomes the world’s first billionaire.

Unfortunately, rainfall from Ian will not reach much of Middle and West Tennessee, so drought conditions are liable to worsen even more over the coming week. Hurricane Forecast 

Ian is now a tropical storm and will likely remain a tropical storm through Friday night. It is possible the storm could restrengthen into a minimal hurricane before making landfall again, though those chances are slim. The system will finally weaken into a tropical depression, as it falls apart in the southern Appalachians.

Forecast rainfall amounts from Ian that would reach at least one inch. The National Hurricane Center has removed us from the significant rainfall from Ian. That just means they don’t expect us to get an inch of rain or more. Lighter amounts remain possible from showers.

Temps are expected to drop off rather quickly tonight. By morning, some of us could be seeing patchy frost. If you have frost-sensitive plants you might want to protect them.

Some of you have reported patchy frost this week. Even more of us may see frost Thursday morning. We have very dry air in place and dry air cools off quickly. As winds die down and skies remain clear, the stage will be set for a more widespread frost tonight, especially in typically cooler areas.

Several of you have also asked me about outdoor events this weekend. The forecast is trending just a bit drier, so don’t cancel those plans just yet, especially if your event is OK with dodging showers (rather than continuous rainfall). As with any tropical system, the track could change again, so stay tuned. We should have a better handle on the weekend forecast by tomorrow afternoon.

A very powerful high-end cat 4 Hurricane Ian made landfall at 2:05 this afternoon at Cayo Costa, Florida. This is just north of Fort Meyers and about 80 miles south of Tampa. The storm continues to have maximum sustained winds of 150 mph, with higher gusts. The storm was just shy of being a cat 5.

This is a historic hurricane and the name “Ian” is sure to be retired after this season. Keep all those in the path of this storm close to your hearts today and tonight. For even more hurricane info, please visti the National Hurricane Center website at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

The next three days are lookin great! Low humidity and comfortable temps with sunny skies and starry nights will make for some great weather. A few more clouds may move across our skies Friday, as the remnants of Ian make their way toward our area.

Hurricane Forecast 

Hurricane Ian is now a very powerful cat 4 hurricane, with winds of 155 mph. The storm is only two mph below cat 5 strength. The storm is expected to make landfall just south of Tampa. Devastating storm surge, coastal wind damage, and inland flooding are expected with this storm. Coastal and inland tornadoes are also a significant threat. Florida remains under a state of emergency.
