Special Tues Night Wx Update

Thursday will be a weather-aware day for severe storms

Friday may be a weather-aware day for light snow

Weather Statements

Strong to severe storms are looking more likely for Thursday. Straight-line winds will be the main threat, though an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out.

Wintry weather is possible Friday, especially for those on the western edge of the plateau (ie Mayland – Monterey)

Severe Weather Concerns

As always, timing could change but I don’t foresee any significant changes to this current timeframe. The atmosphere will contain a lot of wind on Thursday. Winds just above us are almost always stronger than the winds down here at the surface. The same will certainly be true Thursday. Any storm that can push those stronger winds to the surface will be severe. There will be some turning of winds with height, so we can’t rule out a spin-up tornado. Stay tuned.

From this morning’s update, I have increased my concern for damaging straight-line winds. Keep in mind that straight-line winds can be just as destructive as weak tornadoes.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed our entire area in the marginal risk for severe storms for Thursday.

Winter Weather Concerns

Guidance has been trending lower with moisture. Still, these “northwest flow” events can be very challenging to forecast. Stay tuned for further updates.

As with all northwest flow events, the greatest risk for accumulation will be on the western edge of the plateau, especially around Monterey.

Chance for a Snow Day

I had to reduce the chance for a snow day, based on today’s guidance. Stay tuned for changes that may come to this over the next couple of days!
