Wed Afternoon Forecast Update

Temps are struggling to recover and I’ve had to lower forecast highs for today. Cloud cover and a chilly northerly breeze are not going to get us to 40 degrees today. I’ve update the hourly temp and precip chart, as seen below.

The forecast for tonight is another headache. Another wintry mix of freezing rain, rain, and snow will likely overspread the plateau again tonight but, like last night, one degree of difference will make a world of difference with impacts. Temps today have been cooler than they were yesterday ahead of last night’s wintry mix, so there may be more impacts. The NWS Nashville is considering issuing winter weather advisories for tonight, but it is yet unclear who will be added to those. I’ll keep you posted.

Last night’s light icing was mainly confined to the northwest portion of Cumberland County, the Monterey area, and much of Fentress County. Thankfully, the forecast of ice totals of under 1/10 inch (glaze) verified and thankfully much of that ice was confined to vegetation and not the main roads. If we had gotten just a bit colder or if we had been colder yesterday for our daytime high….we’d be in a different boat and it’s not a boat any of us want to be in. Many of us will take snow over ice any day.

The map I shared last night that showed where the greatest ice impacts would likely be is the area that may see the greatest risk tonight, as well. That map is shown below. Anyone north of that bold red line is indeed at risk for more wintry weather tonight. I’ll have to monitor the risk for those of you south of that line and try to figure out if you all will once again hover around the 32-34 degree mark again. Also, does anyone have any aspirin for me? (ha)

Be mindful that with temps so cold today, any fog you encounter tonight could be freezing on bridges and overpasses. Like last night, it’s the bridges and overpasses that are always most concerning, as they freeze much faster than roadways that don’t have air flowing freely beneath them.

I’ll have a special update again tonight at 8:00 (or sooner if needed), so stay tuned! This headache of a forecast ends Friday! Yippee!!! (ha!)
