Wind Advisory Remains in Effect

The wind advisory remains in effect for tonight. The maximum wind gusts are being felt at this hour and will be with us for at least the next couple of hours. A line of showers is moving toward the plateau and that band of rain will mark the transition to lighter winds, though winds will likely remain quite gusty for the overnight hours.

We’ll go from wind gusts of 35-45 mph to wind gusts of 23-35 mph behind the front.

These winds are the result of what we call a low level jet, which are quite common with spring and winter storm systems. These winds are strongest just ahead of a front, which is what we’re seeing right now. The southerly winds are screaming out ahead of the “cold” front.

Some gusts have already topped 40 mph.

The wind graph from this morning’s blog is shown below. I’ve circled the wind that we are feeling at this hour. The graph started at 9:00 this morning and runs until 9:00 Wednesday morning. The only change would be to add some 40 mph wind gusts.

Power outages are being reported across the plateau.

The radar at 9:15 shows that front nearing the plateau. Winds will relax somewhat behind that front.
