MM’s 5-Day Forecast

Yesterday’s Weather Statistics

Radar-Estimated Rainfall for Yesterday

On This Day

1886 – The town of Indianola, Texas, was completely destroyed by a hurricane, and never rebuilt.

1975 – Viking 1 was launched by a Titan/Centaur rocket from Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 5:22 p.m. EDT to begin a half-billion mile, 11-month journey through space to explore Mars. The 4-ton spacecraft went into orbit around the red planet in mid-1976.

Tropics

There are five areas to watch in the Gulf and Atlantic over the next seven days. The area of concern in the Gulf will likely develop into a tropical depression as it moves toward Texas by Tuesday. The area of concern near the northern coast of South America is being investigated by Hurricane Hunters this morning. Hopefully it curves on out to sea, but you can never be too sure. Tropical Depression Six is expected to dissipate in the next 48 hours. The red shaded region closer to Africa may become a short-lived depression or tropical storm today. By Monday, winds in the atmosphere are expected to cause the system to dissipate. The orange shaded region closest to Africa will likely develop into a tropical depression or storm in the coming days as it moves westward. It could be one to watch. Actually, the tow orange shaded areas of concern are probably the two we need to watch the closest!

As always, I’ll let you know if any of these ever threatens to bring us rain!

Hurricane Hilary is already bringing impacts to southern California and Arizona and it’s only just begun! A rough day is in store for this area. Hundred year flood events are likely in some communities. Isolated tornados are also a threat, as well as very strong mountain winds that could exceed 80 mph. Power outages and water rescues are likely for this area today and tonight.

With tropical systems, it’s often the water that has the biggest impacts. This map shows flood risks over the coming days. Notice the enormous amount of real estate at risk for flooding. There are many areas that will pick up a year’s worth of rain in 24-36 hours! Keep in mind that many of these areas only get a couple of inches or rain or so in a year. This storm could bring 2-5 inches of rain for many, and up to 10 inches for others.
